Found out I have PCOS
VSG on 02/20/17
Anyone else have PCOS? My primary doctor called me today and said she believes I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. I haven't had VGS yet, but I'm hoping I will within six months. What should I expect from this diagnosis? I am often confused for the opposite gender (doesn't help that I keep my hair short too), does that at all play a part in that (I always thought it was because I was obese)? My doctor said, I might be producing a lot of testosterone so that is why I am asking. Anyone with PCOS have it get better after the surgery? If not, have any success getting pregnant despite it?

Highest Weight ~400, Surgery Weight 293, Current Weight 227, Goal Weight 180

Well, I have never been confused for the opposite gender. :) And yes, I have had it my whole life.
After I lost 60 pounds with WW, my periods completely normalized. My PCOS symptoms got better. Actually, my periods were as reliable as a clock, after the 60 pounds were gone.
I will also say I lost the weight long after I got pregnant and had my kids. However, at that time time I weighed 220 and then 250 pounds. I gained weight after that, had my kids long time ago.
But, I still have it.
I did a PCOS post yesterday. You will see it if you scroll.
I have ALL the symptoms for PCOS...except for one.
I got pregnant the first time, every time. But, then I know when I ovulate. My body tells me. All I had to do was have sex on my ovulation day, and got pregnant immediately. However, if I weighed more than 250 who knows how easy or hard it would have been to get pregnant.
So, PCOS does not mean infertility for all, but unfortunately, it is for many.
The best meds are meformin and spironolactone.
Good luck!

Both I and my 13 year old daughter have PCOS. I was small, weighed around 110 pounds, until I got pregnant with her, and then at that time I gained tons of weight, and got really bad facial hair. I didn't have a clue what it was then, just bought stuff for the hair and kept going.. I've had two more daughters since then, and had my tubes tied with the last one.
After I had the last one, 6 years ago, I started getting really really bad migraines. I was sent to an endocrinologist who wanted to put me on metformin, but I wouldn't take it b/c I was scared of it at the time. I later developed high blood pressure.
Around the same time, I started to have mega pain in my lower pelvic region and my lower back.. that I then attribtued to a botched tubal.. the surgery was a disaster. It was so bad at times that all I could do was curl up in a ball on the couch with the heating pad and cry. So finally last summer I went to my GYN for help.
She put me on metformin, 2000 mgs a day, and the nuvoring for the hormones, and while the pain is still there, it is rarely as bad as it was before. She was also the one who started me on the VSG path, saying that she believes if I can lose the weight, around 100lbs is her guess, that all of the PCOS symptoms should go away..

Wow, that's a lot of metformin. I take 500 mg a day. My doctor tried me with 1,000 and I could not tolerate it. So, dropped down to 500 where I have always been.
Was sleeved 2 weeks ago. Doc kept me on metformin but took me off spironolactone, whimper, whimper.

Hi. I was diagnosed with PCOS several months before my surgery. My endicrinologist placed me on 500 mg of Metformin twice a day for PCOS insulin resistance issues, I follow a low carb diet and my dr took me off of all hormone bc. Anyways, by the time I left the hospital (4 days) after my surge I was told that my insulin levels are normal and not to resume the Metformin. At my last checkup about a week ago my levels were still normal. So at least that aspect of PCOS seems better as a result of the VSG.
I am still relatively a new post op (just over 1 mo out) so I havent' noticed any of my other symptoms improving as of yet but I am sure with time my symptoms will get better. Additionally, I have lost 20 lbs during my first month post op which to me is a miracle considering how hard it was for me pre op to lose even 1 lb when I was not on the Metformin. As far as pregnancy, this hasn't been an issue yet with me but my dr assures me that WL from the surgery will increase fertility.
Anyways, I am sure u will be fine once u do more research and get comfortable with the diagnosis. I know it's all kind of confusing in the beginning. Best of luck!
