I am going through the insurance requirements for surgery approval. My next step is the psychological evaluation. Can anyone who has gone through this before give me any insight into what to expect?

for me, I spent an hour filling out surveys and then another hour sitting with the psychologist asking questions about my motivations and lifestyle.

REally, I wouldnt worry about it. If your psychologist does catch something, that could mean that there is something else in your life that could be causing the weight gain.

When I went in, she basically said that her job is to evaluate the patient to determine if there are any psychological pitfalls (emotional eating, depression etc) that could sabotage the weight loss process. Also, the psychologist learned what kind of "learner" I am and personality so the rest of the team would know what are the "buttons" to push to get the best motivation.

Mine asked me if I had ever been in therapy before.  She asked about my diet.  I am a Kaiser patient and I had to do 6 months of classes before my surgery so I had plenty of time to adjust to what we needed to give up.  She asked if I smoked or drank alcohol.  She asked about my childhood and my family life now.

Mine was at my initial 3 hour visit to the doctor's office. Met with the nutritionist, the social worker and the insurance lady. An hour with each. The psych clearance with the social worker was her going over a questionnaire that I had already filled out and sent back to them a week prior. Essentially asking about any stresses in my life, warning of transfer addictions and asking about support I had for post op. I really do not like therapists, so I said very little and answered only yes and no. She did most of the talking... and that was it.

It seemed like a waste of time to me to be honest.  I sat there and told her my whole life story and answered questions about my family, friends, job, etc for an hour and that was pretty much it.  I would have loved for them to take the time to do something useful like explain how we can learn to deal with life/stress without food or something, but it wasn't any of that.

I voluntarily sought out counseling on my own a few weeks ago to deal with all the changes that's in store and to help me change my way of thinking about food because surely that is what makes people go back to their old ways and regain their weight.  Not dealing with the mental aspect of it will lead to failure.

My evaluation was about two hours. I did a survey on a computer, then went into her office where she asked me questions about my answers. I felt like it was a waste of time, though.

Mine was 20 minutes.  I'm not kidding.  The psychiatrist asked me some standard questions (all of which I had answered on the questionnaire in the reception area that she then looked at quizzically and said, "What is this?") Then she warned me politely about not becoming an alcoholic because she sees patients who had WLS and became alcoholics, and then she sent me on my way.

Oh, and then as I was checking out, she came out of her office to mention that even though I had pre-approval for the exam, since nothing was actually wrong with me, the insurance company will probably deny the claim. Have a nice day!
