Protein Shake question
VSG on 09/04/12
So I started drinking protein Shakes for breakfast this week (I'm still Pre-op). I am having some mega issues. I am having abdominal cramping, frequent bowel movements and headaches and a little bit of nausea. The brand I'm using is Pure Protein (it's the frosty chocolate flavor) It's 140 cals and 25 grams protein. It tastes really good, but I just feel lousy. I'm just not sure if it's from this particular brand or if my body is just adjusting to it. Has anyone had the same symptoms. Any advice would be great, thanks.
I know my doc insisted that I do whey protein isolate as the first ingredient on any protein supplement. NECTAR and UNJURY are two brands that I've done very well with. You may want to see if you can get some individual packets and experiment a bit. VITAMIN SHOPPE has an online store with free shipping...they have the NECTAR packets in bulk. But if you have a VITAMIN SHOPPE close by...you can pick up just one packet and give it a try. The headaches may be related to giving up caffeine??? I know I felt lousy (no headaches, but just tired and irritable) during this pre-op phase.
Hope you feel better soon!!

First of all what are you mixing the powder with? Water, Milk???? I mix mine with fat free lactaid milk
I am also pre op and i have tried two brands so far. Unjury, i have had no problems with and it tastes great. Chike on the other hand gives me the runs, makes me nauseaus after i drink it but i have not had headaches.I also dont like the texture of it and its also too sweet for me. You are better off trying samples of different ones instead of investing in a large container. Both Chike and Unjury sell samples.

Well, to begin with, I haven't eliminated caffeine completely yet, I still have 1 cup of coffee in the morning (I know, I'm a bad girl), but I am proud of myself because I kicked the pepsi habit.
I mixed with milk twice, then I decided to mix with coffee and creamer, and I mixed with water once (which tasted weird to me). I have had the same reaction every time.
I actually did a little research and I am wondering if I have a problem with sucralose. I actually am not a huge fan of artificial sweetener, but since I'm trying to eliminate sugar, I bought some powerade zero and some propel zero at the same time as the protein powder. I think I'm going to skip my protein shake today and still drink those and see if I still get that lousy feeling. If I do, I guess I will know the culprit. If they don't bother me than I will probably go ahead and buy a sampler pack of the unjury and maybe that will solve my problem.
Thanks for all of your help!

I had the same problem with sweetners like Sweet N Low, Splenda, etc and had the same problems you are having. I have since cut them all out and have relied on regular sugar (told my doctor what has happening and he said go ahead but use very little) due to my diabetes. Well since I have changed the problem has gone away and I don't drink/eat enough sugar throughout the day for it to affect my diabetes (A1C as of last Wed - 6.5).
Talk to your doctor and see what he says. You might be surprised to hear him say use just a little bit since you're not tolerating artifical sweetners.
Good Luck!

Thanks guys! Well, I think it just took me a couple of days for my body to get used to them because now I'm drinking it with no problems at all. I think I'm still going to try the unjury, I'm curious!
