It could be from stomach acid...are you on a PPI to reduce/control stomach acid? Too much acid can mimic hunger.

My hunger came back about 3 days after surgery.  Now, the only time I don't have hunger is on days when I'm VERY stressed.  Other than those days, I get hungry every 3-4 hours.

The PPI was what finally killed my "hunger." I was the same as you, about 3-4 days after surgery the "hunger" started. At my two week follow up I mentioned this to the surgeon (I was also having some heartburn issues) and she started me on 2x Pepsid a day. Within 48 hours my "hunger" was gone completely. If I miss the dose of Pepsid it comes roaring back in a hurry.

Antacid can actually make your condition worse.  While it does provide some temporary relief, your body will actually produce MORE acid trying to compensate for what you just drank or chewed.  Your body is always trying to correct itself back to homeostasis and it knows that you just put something in there to reverse the acid it thinks should be there.  A PPI is really the only good way of overcoming this, not getting caught up in the trap of buying endless supplies of TUMS or Malox which only make the situation worse.

Personally I would wait to talk to the doc. I'm sure he/she will recommend a specfic brand that they've had good results with. I found the generic version of Pepsid works just fine.

2 weeks post op I started with SEVERE acid .. I had been hungry ever since.  It is true that acid in your stomach can feel like hunger pains.  It took 3 different medications but I finally got it under control.

I took your advise and I called my doctor office.  I spoke with his nurse, she is calling the pharmacy with my prescription and I'll pick it up at lunch time.

Thank you guys, I knew I could count on you!

I've been hungry since day one and on a PPI.  It's made the last 4 months definately harder mentally, but it's seeting me up for long term success.

Good luck! You'll be at solids soon:)
