I'd agree with ya schwag if she was talking to a friend or something about it.  However, this was to a patient in a professional setting.  Even if she did disagree....she should have kept her trap shut about it.

This is true too... but I don't really see medical assistants as "professionals".... but I would have been pissed if anyone in that setting told me that. Just in general you don't expect anyone in a professional setting to give their PERSONAL opinions on sht though.

While I don't disagree with the other posters about how I should report it to the Dr and Office Manager, I am finding that I like your response.  Maybe I'm just feeling very forgiving today for some reason.  I meant it when I said I really didn't care what she thinks so I just kinda let it slide off my back.  The impression that I felt / got from her was that she just really didn't know or understand much about it.  Kinda like hwag wrote .. i didn't either until I started researching it.  This is no excuse to be rude, but the tone in her voice and how friendly she was and talkative didn't give me the impression she was rude, she was just ignorant (not educated.)

Thanks for all the support from everyone in how I handled it.  A lot of times I can be a real ass (as some on here can probably agree to) .. yesterday I thought I would be the nice guy I guess.  I am feeling happier these days .. years ago I would have probably taken this to the supreme court LOL

Thanks again everyone.  I appreciate all the replies and your support!

That conversation is something I would have told my doctor about - she really should hire medical assistants with a bit more tact.

Cheating?  Seriously?  So I guess those people with diabetes are cheating by taking insulin?  Or those with cancer are cheating with their chemo?

I think us fatties are doing a little too much with these types of comparisons. We made ourselves fat and could have stopped ourselves along the way the entire way and chose not to. You can't even sort of compare that to cancer.

Actually hwag, I have cancer and I do believe it is comparable.  My cancer began as a direct result of sun damage, of which could have been prevented in my younger years.  I suppose the only difference is that when I was a child my parents had no idea to use sunscreen other than to make it so we could avoid the pain of sunburn.  Back then it was almost a kid badge of honor to get burned, so no fault of the parents.  Other cancers have a direct link to obesity as well, so in a way there is a connection that way.   if you smoke and get lung cancer, would you be surprised?  Now for sure there are many examples of cancer that are not avoidable too, so I am not looking to paint an all or nothing type picture here.

I have met people who have skin cancer that never were much for being in the sun also lung cancer and never smoked. Then there are the children who get cancer, then the whole breast cancer thing. Various cancers run rampant in my family with no specific cause. While yours may have a direct link and there may be others that do as well I think there are more that don't, I still don't think they're comparable to making a choice to over eat for an extended period of time.

This chick may have had a case of speak first, think later but you did a great job, Kevin, of giving her something to think about. When I say stupid **** I hope it's to someone as level headed as you!

Yeah, you handled that quite well. I probably would have cried. I would have told my doctor too.

That was very unprofessional.
