I am almost 60, Is it still worth it to get the VSG?
I am female, morbidly obese, and have 100 pounds to lose. I have Sleep Apnea, borderline Diabetes, Osteoporosis, High Cholesterol, as well as severe pain in my feet due to my weight which limits my exercise. My internist has recommended that I get Bariatric Surgery. I have had my first appointment with a Bariatric Surgeon *****commends the VSG, so I am in the prep period of meeting with Nutritionist, Mental Health Therapist, and losing 10 pounds. But I am wondering if it is really worth it to do this, since I am almost age 60? I'd love to hear from some of you in my age group that have had VSG. Thanks.
I have not had my surgery yet but I would say Yes Yes and Yes !! It can help all your health issues and keep ya around alot longer. I am 53 and getting a VSG. All I need is my doctor to write the letter to the insurance company....again. I can't wait...even with the pain issues one can face with having the stomach removed I am excited. I have 150 pounds to lose and i know with the surgery and this board I can do it.
I am *only* 43, but without a doubt I would recommend it. My mother in law is in her 70's and if she could she still would. The recovery is very, very managable overall and literally within 3 months you feel like a new person. I am at 6 months out and now those 110 pounds are a distant memory. You will DRASTICALLY improve your quality of life. This all assumes that your doctor feels you are a good candidate.

I'm 58...was 53 when I had the vsg. Yes, it's SO worth it. For me, recovery from the surgery was easy and my health is immeasurably better now. I had almost exactly your same co-morbidities. Today, the apnea is gone, blood sugar is normal, I have improved my bone density scores back into osteopenia through adding strength training, and my cholesterol is normal. Go for it!

Well I hope so cause I'm 60 and planning to get VSG in Sept. I have the same issues that you listed and more. I'm at the beach with my family - husband, kids and grand kids - having so much trouble getting around and play with the grand kids - so hope that next year - I'll be able to walk the beach and play with them.
I am 40 now, but before surgery I HAD:
Sleep Apnea, borderline Diabetes, Osteoporosis, High Cholesterol, as well as MILD pain in my KNEE...
After surgery, the only thing I'm left with is Osteopenia (beginning of Osteoporosis)... as well, nothing can really cure it as far as I know.
I recomend it. You'll probably live longer and healthier. It's annoying sometimes that I can only eat half an English muffin as I had this morning... still, I would do it all over again. And I'm a size 2-4 now ;)

While I may only be 29, my children (and future grandchildren at some point) are the primary reason I chose to do this. I was self-pay, which made it a very difficult decision. I'm only 10 days out, but I already feel that it has been life-changing already - not in the weight, I've lost 12 pounds since surgery day, but mentally and emotionally I feel like a new person. I am not negative about things quite so much, and for the first time in years I have hope and faith in knowing that I will lose this weight, this time permanently. If your insurance covers it, then I can't come up with a reason as to why it wouldn't be worth it.

I was 60 two years ago when I had my VSG. I can't recommend it highly enough!
I had the same issue, I think, where you feel like you're past the halfway point of your life, there's not as much to look forward to as there is to look back on. But a lot of that attitude has to do with how you feel physically, how limited your life is because of your physical issues! When you lose the weight, your attitude opens up to the world of possibilities that lie before you, and the things you'll be able to do.
If age is the only stumbling block, step over it and go for it! Stay on this board, read what everyone has to say, take things with a grain of salt, follow your surgeon's food, vites, and exercise plan no matter what (even if your WL stalls for a few days or weeks), and when in doubt do what the winners (losers!) do on here.
