when my son get's low blood sugar (he's a type I diabetic) he takes dextrose tablets. when i get low (i'm not diabetic but have been having some low blood sugar episodes even though i'm in ketosis), i don't know if i should take the tabs too to get my bs back up again because i don't want to knock myself out of ketosis. any suggestions?
While I can appreciate your not wanting to knock yourself out of ketosis, having hypoglycemia is not good either and is more concerning then you loosing a little less weight. This is a life threatening emergency, unlike much of the other nonsense I get called for. To me the decision would be quite clear that if your sugar is low .. you need to correct it. Eat something or take a dextrose tablet before you pass out.
Maybe you should talk to your doc and nut about increasing your carbs a little more if this is happening frequently. Last thing you need is to drop so low 911 is putting an IV in your arm and giving you dextrose because your unconscious. Everyone journey is a little different and maybe the 40g of carbs or less just wont work for you.

hate to have that happen, the passing out i mean, my mom used to pass out (she was hypoglycemic in her 20's and now a type II diabetic). i'm very lucky to have a glucose meter and as soon as i start feeling shaky i can check my blood sugar.
Kevin is giving some good advice here. When I was freshly sleeved I kept having issues with low blood sugar- a totally new experience for me. Kevin was kind enough to post back then on suggestions on how to deal with it, and it made a huge difference. I am not sure how low you are going, but I had a few mornings where I was unable to get out of bed and if the hubby hadn't been there to get me something I would have been in some serious trouble.
Initially I really took the under 40 grams of carbs to heart. Eventually I let go of that, as it was not worth dealing with low blood sugar. I immediately started feeling better after putting some more carbs back in the diet and being careful of spacing them out to help even out the blood sugar. My weight loss has been humming along nicely, and that is with eating 1000-1200 calories a day for the last few months. The first few months out I kept it under 800.

yeah it's all good advice. i think i will try to stick to carbs on the low glycemic index, so they don't get absorbed so fast (which could lead to a crash). so no sugar! sugar bad! lol.
that's great to hear you are feeling better and losing weight too :)
i'm quit excited for surgery but also really scared too. i don't know how my stomach is going to react to the surgery, because right now she's a real picky ***** and gets very bloaty and gassy and crampy because of issues with my lining. plus i have gall bladder problems. actually to tell you the truth since i have been eating my 'faux' post vsg diet, i've had some really good days of no bloat or discomfort, so hopefully i can keep the acid in check after they cut her out and maybe things will actually be better!
will be very vigilant after surgery regarding carbs etc. thanks all for advice.

Trust me as someone who has in the last four months fainted once and almost did two other times and may have had a seizure the time I passed out ( my sister told me I did,I don't remember but she has seen my foster brother have them so she would know) noway is ketosis worth it.It scared me enough to want to get off my beta blockers and to ask for a meter from my doc.

i actually haven't had surgery yet so while i'm waiting for my date i'm losing some weight, kind of getting my body used to eating smaller amounts and nutrient dense foods, and cutting out the junk, especially the fluffy white carbs like bread, pasta and rice (two of my can't stop eating foods). i notice i get super weak and low blood sugar. luckily right now i can eat more if i get too shaky from the low calories, but once i get this surgery done, i know there will be no turning back and hope to get my **** together before then. i know i can't predict how my body will react to surgery but i don't want things to happen like passing out, seizures and extreme dizziness. i have anxiety and am absolutely phobic about fainting.
i ask those of you who did a two week protein drink liver shrinking diet, did you get shaky and kinda sick in your stomach from it? and if you did, was it any different after surgery? i'd like to know if your body changes in regards to having a smaller stomach, such as the extremely low calories don't affect you as much as it did before surgery. or is it the same?
i've lost 15lbs so far in the last three weeks which is pretty decent! down to 214lbs.
so yeah i've been having four low carb/calorie protein shakes a day, eating greek yogurt for my tummy problems (gastric erosion), green smoothies & steamed green veggies like kale, swiss chard, spinach... tofu, chia seeds, hemp hearts, and my usual herbs and vitamins. not sure why the blood sugar is falling though, although i have to say my tests are only like 3.5 mmol/l when i hit a low (i think that's about 65 mg/dl).. compared to some of my diabetic sons lows they don't seem "as" bad, but are still kinda freaky yanno?

I've been having issues with low blood sugars since I was 3-4 months post-op. You def need to check this out with your PCP. Low blood sugars is NOT anything to mess around with.
Once I realized what was going on, I had to adjust my eating plan to work for me, not against. I cannot skip meals. PERIOD. It's not an option. I have to eat something every 2-3 hours during the day. I also have found I need a high protein/high fat snack right before bed. Otherwise I wake up between 2-3 am in a crash.
I dont take the dextrose tablets now but I kept them with me at all times, just in case, early out. Again, def check with your PCP and in the meantime, eat on a regular basis until things can be worked out.
Good Luck!!!
