I read a LOT of posts here about problems with getting in another water....and it got me to wonder about it...

Is it more than some just are no****er drinkers??   Some cant just drink water without some sort of flavor in it??  People bored with just plain water??
Or is it some kind of reaction to the surgery itself that makes water hard to drink/hold down?

Im  pre-op but a huge water drinker....  I dont need or even want anything it in..

Is that something that is likely to change??

I had my surgery about a week ago and I have found it difficult to drink plain water. I used to love plain water but now I swear by Mio Orange Tangerine. Plain water hits my sleeve like a ton of bricks, at least that's the best way I can describe it. Everyone's experience is different :)

Very Early out you will have to sip rather than gulp, but I never had a problem with water. Honestly I think a lot of people are so used to drinking crappy things it's an adjustment. And honestly I think some people are being whiners, the same people who say they will vomit if they drink ANY protein drink (even though there are hundreds of different ones).

Yeah actually some of us really do have issues with plain water, not that we are used to drinking crappy things. Plain water actually causes my stomach to cramp.

Adding flavor whether it's Mio or citrus slices changes the PH balance (or something) and is a lot easier on my stomach. I dont WHINE about anything, I only state the facts!! Nearly 2.5 years out and I still have stomach cramps from plain water. I'm detoxed from the crappy things I used to drink so that's not it.

As far as the protein shakes, they gagged me due to the smell/taste. I did keep trying and finally found one I could stand the smell/taste of about 6 months post-op. I'm still a 2 a day gal. So I agree, keep trying until you find something you can handle.

Same for me, Nana! Anymore than a couple sips and I get weird cramping...I usually use lemon to flavor mine. WHINE!!!

typically it is hard to fit in even clear liquids immediately post-op - the swelling is such there isn't much room. I know it took me a WEEK before I could get in 64 oz (kind of a minimum) and that was sipping ALL DAY LONG.

also - plain water didn't taste right for a long time after surgery. I got used to protein drinks with fake sweeteners in them and I regretted that. Wish I had stayed with regular sugar, frankly.

so, yes, it varies but in general tastes change and heaven knows your capacity will change.

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

1) Swelling sucks, and makes sipping stuff painful, uncomfortable.
2) Water has a neutral pH, our tiny tummies are usually pretty acidic, toss a neutral pH liquid into an acidic environment, it's not typically a pleasant experience, it can cause spasms, and overall discomfort.
3) People's taste change, ketosis causes all sorts of funky body changes, taste/smell being a big one.

I never had issues with water pre-op. Hated it post-op. Hated Crystal light and all the aspartame sweetened crap where it didn't phase me pre-op.

I drank water pre op all the time.  Post op you have to sip for quite awhile AND the ph of tap water can make it tough on your tummy.  I didn't tolerate plain water well until about 5 months out and it still sometimes bothers me.  I drank peach tea and water mixed with stevia and lemon/lime powders for quite a long time.  Then I had some issues with leg cramping and started drinking PowerAde Zero.  Dropping stevia seemed to much reduce my constipation.  Now I'm water, powerade, and sometimes tea.

You won't know what works for you until you are post op, and, as my experience shows it may change over time.

its a whole different world post op.

i only drank crystal light, unsweetened tea, or water pre-op. Post op I could barely get my fluids in, i had alot of swelling. it took me weeks/months to be able to drink 64 ounces. Getting around 35 ounces including my shakes was the maximum for a while.

i even had to go get fluids at the hospital 3 times because if you get behind there is no way to catch up. and its really easy to forget to drink because the sensation was gone for me.

some people post op get their water in no problem, they talk about drinking 100 ounces a day and it blows my mind because that is definitely not what i experienced.

I've never heard anyone say the sensation was gone but I definitely feel that way. I have to force myself every day and I lose the battle.

I've literally been TEN times for fluids in 6 months.

I hate water, I never have the urge to drink, I was never a drinker even before surgery. The only 3 things I drink are water, protein shakes and gatorade (when I am trying to rehydrate)
