A good use for those nasty protein powders... tips and suggestions?

I have already fallen prey to buying too many protein powders that I cannot stand. So, I started experimenting with smoothies to mask the flavor.

My FAVE is my breakfast smoothie where I get 23 protein, 2 fruits, and one veggie serving all for 188 calories and 23 carbs.

I ordered all of the unjury flavors like an idiot, and I HATE that strawberry sorbet.. blah! But I started playing around w/smoothies and came up with this one:

Handfull of spinach leaves
1/4 cup of blueberries
1/4 banana
8oz water
1 scoop strawberry sorbet

Sometimes I'll not do the blueberries, or I'll add hemp seed to it.

Now, any ideas for the unflavored which I hate everything I've put it in? haha

Try to think of the unflavored as a blank pallette.  Here is my favorite at the moment:

1 scoop (I have the jarrow brand)
8 ounces fat free milk
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
1 tablesoon splenda

pulse enough to blend

4 large frozen strawberries
enough ice to thicken it up

Blend.  Awesome!

Today I think I am going to try

1 scoop
8 ounces reduced sugar orange juice
spoosh of sf vanilla torani
fat free yogurt, not sure how much yet.

Going for an orange creamsicle type.  I may instead not use unflavored and try it with vanilla powder with just the orange juice- seems like it would likely better balance then me trying to figure it out on the first try.

I hated the way it thickened up everything I put it in. The only advice I have is to offer it up here or do as I did and show it the dumpster. I found no good use for it. I am sure though some other vets will have better advice but feel solace in the fact you are not alone.

Ps: I forgot about pudding early out. The only time I used it is when I was trying to get in protein when I finally got to start eating. I mixed it in with some SF pudding cups and it was bareable. I still think the chocolate would have been better but was trying to find uses. You could also try mixing it with broth but it had a few lumps when I tried but I also did not blend it well early out.

Take them to your support group and offer to trade flavors with someone.  That way, you both win.

23 carbs sounds like a lot for one meal ??  Just wondering how many carbs you have per day. I'm always curious what other people are doing :)

I have been staying under 35, so I guess that is why it sounded high for what I do. It amazes me all the different plans out there. I know that each surgeon has their own, but you think they would try to standardize it a bit through there associations and bariatric meetings. Thanks for the smoothie tips.

Hi.
My current favorite use of protein powder is adding a scoopfull of chocolate (I like Nectar Truffle) to 1/3 cup ricotta cheese. Also add sugar free Torani strawberry of raspberry flavor, and 1/2 -1 tsp of unsweetened cocoa powder. The protein powder and syrup have enough sweetness that don't need additional artificial sweetener. I can get 2 snacks out of it.

Also Nectar Vanilla Bean Torte powder to ricotta and some peach or mango syrup.

I like the taste and texture of ricotta better than greek yogurt, for which you can do the same, but the protein isn't as good.
Also, with either of these, the thickening doesn't matter.

The ricotta has 90 calories, 5 g protein, and 2 carbs per 1/4 cup, and the unsweetened cocoa powder is about 7 calories and 1g carb/ tsp.

I've got a package of unflavored Unjury. I think I"ll use it with ricotta for dinner and add an update on the flavor.

Oops, can't find the unflavored, so I chose another flavor I can't stand (Orange sorbet) and mixed it with some peach Torani. Not great, but definitely better than trying to get the shake down.

I occasionally use the unflavored with crystal light. I found it worked the best when I used 10 ounces of water, half a scoop of the unflavored protein, then the individual crystal light packet (the fruit punch was the best).
