Hi everyone...

I am scheduled for surgery July 9th.  I was told I should loose about 20lbs beforehand.  So, I have been pretty faithful with the liquid diet.  I had to travel out of state for week the first week, so I did the best I could and have lost over 10 lbs.  However, whenever I went to my pre-op appt with my doctor, he asked how my pre-op is going.  I told him it was going well and that I really liked the Unjury shakes.  He said that Unjury was not on the liquid diet list that he gave me, that I would not be allowed to have Unjury until after surgery.  Anyway, he said that I need to stick to the plan for the next few days.  His plan gave 4 options #1-Medifast 70 #2 Bariatric Advantage High Protein #3 Muscle Milk Light #4 Isopure Low Carb Powder, LaBrada Lean Body, Met Rx Meal Replacement, MM light.  I was soooo discouraged that I welled up with tears.  Sooo...I had to buy products that I don't know if I can tolerate.  He is a wonderful and caring doctor, but I was really upset at myself because I didn't follow his plan.  I have been so siked about this for months now, changing bad habits with good ones...I hope I can lose more in 2 days.....

I'm on optifast as my prediet... My understanding is that he uses that as it is a meal replacement with protein and not just a protein powder.  Maybe a similar issue?  Or is he stressing that you need to follow his instructions so you don't injure yourself after surgery....  You should have okayed any deviations from what they want.

However don't let it upset you at this point.... Stress is never good....

Im thinking if he was really upset he would already have cancelled surgery....

Just try and follow instructions and get deviations okay... Each of our surgical teams have our best interests at heart!

OK, first huge hugs to you.  You don't know me yet, but if you are on this board for any length of time you will understand that I am one of the biggest sticklers for following a good program to the letter.  You have not done anything wrong here.  The nutritional stats on Unjury are great.  I am a bit surprised that you only lost 10 pounds following an all protein shake diet, but I don't think you would have lost more had you used any of the protein drinks your doctor recommended.  Either you didn't stay on all liquid all the time, or you are just losing slower now.  Either way, don't worry about it now.  The only reason he wants you to lose some weight is to reduce the size of your liver and there is plenty of reasons to believe that even that reason is not as valid as they used to think.  In other words, you will be just fine.  Maybe use this as an opportunity to really learn what is important to follow in your program so that you are not in this position after surgery when it is most important.

I understand your frustration. The protein shakes are subjective to taste...not everyone likes or can tolerate the same thing. For my pre-op, my surgeon has all of his patients on Bariatric Advantage. Thank goodness that is the only one that doesn't make me gag! Lol

My doctor and hospital told me to use unjury. It's medical quality protein. As long as you lose weight and your liver shrinks that's what matters. If he asks what your using give him the answer he wants, how will he know the difference. Bottom line is Unjury does the job.

That's strange! Unjury is a very high quality protein. I wouldn't be so hard on yourself, you didn't know a different brand would cause such an issue. And frankly, the issue is more HIS than yours. It's a great protein and wonderful for pre and post op weight loss. I use the unflavored in a sugar free chocolate pudding. It's the easiest way for me to get to my protein goal each day!

If you were going to mistakenly use a protein "off" plan, you chose a great one. Hang in there!

Don't fret,I myself did not use my doctors suggest proteins or pre-op diet( he had carnation no sugar added and slim fast high protein) and also allowed lean cuisine's for dinner. I did an Atkins style dinner pre-op and I did all shakes for a few days instead of one.I lost more than most of his pre-ops

While it's important to follow your doctor's instructions exactly, especially in regards to anything related to surgery, don't beat yourself up too much over this. If he was really that bothered by the fact that you deviated from his plan, he wouldn't be still planning to operate on you. I really think he was just trying to stress how important following his instructions is, and you seem to understand that loud and clear.

You just have two more days. You can do anything for two days... you got this!
