Getting Acquainted with my Sleeve...

So, I feel like all I do is post on here, but you guys know so much, I can't help myself! Surgery was Tuesday, and I can tell my sleeve is super tight, but I know that liquid just passes through fine, it feels weird/slightly uncomfortable, but it goes down (I got to see it actually go through on a screen at the hospital, it was really cool).

So I'm having a hard time knowing what Mr. Sleevers is trying to tell me. Pretty much everytime I drink it's uncomfortable. Not painful just weird. I know part of it is the size of my sleeve and how swollen it is, and some of it is gas thats moving around when I put stuff in there. I got around 50 ounces of liquids yesterday which they said is fine, just keep working for more. I just really don't know when my sleeve is saying "that's enough, now", or if it's just saying "this feels weird, but it's ok."  I really want to try more protein today, because I can tell my body needs it, I just don't know how much it can take, and it's so hard to tell. I don't even know if you guys know what I mean, I guess I just REALLY don't want to pu**** but I want to get in some protein and as much liquid as I can so I can start to feel more normal. Thanks for any advice!!

OMG ! I know exactly what you mean. I had GERD going in and found myself really not in pain, but was burping up a storm. Ice chips, water, broth, Snapple they all did it. The Snapple was the worst so I had them stop bringing it. I thin it is normal to be feeling tht way. Just take a day at a time. Every day try to get in a little more.

Welcome to the bench sister!

Hey Mary, I am doing pretty good. My main focus right now is to stay hydrated. My husband has been watching my every move and making sure I have everything I need. How are you feeling?

Im 9 days post-op and know EXACTLY what you are feeling... I moved to pureed diet yesterday ( only had 2 tablespoons of grilled turkey) and though I had not an issue, it was weird trying to figure out what my tummy was doing...

this morning Im trying scrambled eggs...

I will say its an odd feeling the liquids slide down....    last night I was able to finally take a slightly bigger sip....

Hi there!
First of all, congrats on being sleeved! Welcome to the loser's bench girl!
Your tummy is still very swollen. I could barely take tiny sips without feeling that tightness. Everyday will get a little better but it will take some time, probably several weeks. That's why it's just so important to literally sip sip sip all day long, whenever we can so we can get all our water in. Since you are concerned about getting your protein in, try to drink the RTD premier shakes. At 30 grams of protein, you can at least get 60 grams of protein in with 2 drinks a day.
Good luck to you!!

Thanks so much, Jenn!! Do you know where I can find that stuff? I bought some Core Power, which tastes pretty good but it's only 20g of protein for the whole bottle (about 11.5 ounces) and pretty carby. I have managed about 8 ounces of that so far today along with water which goes down the best. I think I need to check out GNC tomorrow and maybe taste some new things. Do you think they would have it there?

Congrats on being sleeved. It's a wonderful life! Take full advantage of the wonderful gift you've been given!

First thing to consider, IMO, is that your stomach's acid production hasn't slowed down yet to accommodate it's new size. (This will happen eventually.) Therefore, you'll have a lot of gurgling, moving feelings, mumbling and grumbling from your new sleeve. Also, for some a sudden surge of acid reflux is not uncommon. I had had no reflux for months and months then got sleeved and had a Muscle Milk lite about 11 days out and it sent me over the edge. That's when I took the whole Pepcid thing seriously. I actually ended up on a PPI and have been fine ever since.

This early out, you can consider and count your protein drinks as part of your daily liquid. That's okay. I made a goal of drinking 8 oz of liquid each and every hour. I found when I did that I never felt over full because I took a sip every couple of minutes and then by day three or so I could sip once every 5 minutes to get in the water. By the end of the first week I was getting plenty of liquid and haven't had to think about it much ever since.

Just make sipping a part of your life right now. Getting liquid in is a full time job when newly sleeved, but it is what it is. You must do it or end up in the ER taking IV fluids and paying a bundle, as well.

 Hi Mary,
I understand exactly what you are describing. Each sip I can feel all the way down and sometimes it feels like cramps. I think this is normal. It really hurts if you eat or drink too fast, I found that out. Not sure what overeating would feel like since I really can't get more than 2oz at a time in, ate 3 oz once and waited for something bad to happen but I was fine. Different foods give different feelings as well, so if you are too uncomfortable, hold off that food for a while.

Thanks guys. I made a really yummy cauliflower soup today because I wanted to cook and I wanted to eat something "real". It was good, I blended up about a cup of it. Then, I added some unflavored protein powder and some greek yogurt and, it ruined it for me. It tasted too much like whey and grossed me out!! I only managed an ounce of it. I think I will try it again tomorrow and add the unjury unflavored. I think it hides the whey taste better than the bariatric fusion does.

My surgeon already put me on a PPI for a month and then longer if I need it. I'm going to run some errands tomorrow and see if I can find some better RTD protein. This core power stuff tastes really good (maybe too good) but there is not enough good stuff in it to make it worth drinking the few ounces that I can get down. The good news is that my sleeve seems happier the last few hours. I am getting a rhythm with the sipping and feeling a lot less discomfort.  I just have to keep reminding myself this is just the beginning of my journey and it's ok that I have questions and worries and don't know what I'm doing!
