I haven't had a BM since Saturday. I had surgery Monday. I think this is one of the reasons I'm not losing weight. I'm not uncomfortable, just curious if it is normal. Thanks

Go to a drug store and get some Miralax.  That seems an excessive amount of time to not have dropped at least some pebbles.

I think constipation is common among WLS peeps.  Try to keep your fiber intake high on a daily basis by taking a supplement.  I will take a stool softener once in a while if I go a few days without... well, you know...

If you are doing mostly liquids, as many do early on, there may not be much in there to be moving through. Diarrhea is not an unusual complaint, but again, if there is a clear liquid only diet for a while, there may not be much of anything to eliminate. But you should certainly have some Miralax (or equivalent) and/or some stool softener on hand as our systems don't always know how to handle the sudden dietary changes that we are going through.

I had a lot of issues post op too all the way through month 2.  Miralax combined with colace did the trick.  Maxed out the colace daily with doses of miralax as needed.  It takes a good 24 hours to kick in usually, so check with your doc and start right away if it is approved.

I have a natural occurance of constipation. I would definitely start looking at a stool softener. After about 2-3 weeks, it would be benefitial to start a probiotic (like Colon Health). This has helped me. I forgot to take it for a bout a week or so and found I hadn't had a BM for over a week.

Be careful with constipation. It could do some real damage if you wait too long.

Yes, it can and cause other issues too. You don't want to let it go too long. I would suggest Miralax and/or try some Probiotics. I have recently starting using Probiotics, Centrum makes some that can be sprinkled on yogurt, put into protein shakes, etc. and it seems to work pretty effectively for me and isn't quite as dramatic as Miralax. Everyone is different and you just have to find what works best for you. I know for lots of people, this is an ongoing issue. Good luck!

Since you've probably only had liquids for several days now, I don't think there is cause for alarm at this point. You definitely want to make sure that you are passing gas, as this indicates functional intestines, no blockage, etc. If you go more than a week, I would pick up some Milk of Magnesia (cherry...mint is horrible) to help get you going. That's what I did, with permission from my doc. I am a nurse and we use MOM on post-op patients all the time. If you have issues with maintenance after that, I would try Miralax. It is gentle, not habit forming, just pulls water into the stool. Best of luck and congrats on your sleeve!
