My Fitness Pal - how to set protein goals

I have loved My Fitness Pal through the post-op diet.  Now that I'm on slowly beginning on (week 2 post-op) pureed foods I'm ready to use it again for more than just documenting my weight loss.  I don't see the nutritionist yet until I'm farther along on what I can eat.

How do I set my protein goals without the fat & carb goals going way up?  How many calories should I set it for?  Since our servings sizes are so small - does it still work well for monitoring our diets?  I love keeping track of my protein on it.

Thanks!!

Use the customize goals feature on MFP. How many calories does your surgeon and dietitian suggest? In the first month postop I was only taking about 450 calories per day and just meeting the minimum protein requirements of 60 gms per day. I was given advice not to focus on calories, but focus on protein first and keep carbs to 30 gms or less and calories will usually fall in line. In 2nd and 3rd months postop I was taking about 70 gms protein and 500-600 calories. Now at 5 months, I am taking about 700-800 calories and 80-100 gms protein. Always temper these guidelines with your physician's recommendations.

I am two weeks out from surgery too (but do not have a post-op diet or any restrictions as to what I can eat from day 10 on). I have been using My Fitness Pal very happily, despite needing to ignore a lot of it.  Some of their items can not be changed, some can be changed but only if you log on to the computer to do it (not from mobile device apps).  It still counts calories (I just ignore that) and it still bases percentages on "normal" caloric intake.  (I haven't yet found that I can change the calories per day but I think I'd put in about 650?)  I have not entered my weight as I can track that without the app.  I use it to track my water and my protein, and to feel accountable for the food that I choose to eat.  I have found the calories, carbs and fat info to be interesting, but mostly ignore them.  Protein is on the list and that's just where I focus.  In the summary, when I reach my goals, it tells me I am over the allotted goal of protein by giving me a negative number in red.  (I just want the total numbers to be about 60 - 100 grams per day)

Clearly a LOT of WLS people are using this tool since it already contains long lists of Unjury, Isopure and other weight-loss/bariatric foods from which to choose.  I'm surprised they havent allowed users to customize the goals more.  If you find a way to do it, please let me know too!  It does work well to monitor our eating, but there could be improvements.

Good luck to you!!!  :)

Go to "Goals" in the tool bar banner at the top of the page. Click. Then click "Change Goals".  Then choose "Custom".

From there, make your adjustments. Start with calories and then just manipulate the percentages as you work down the column to make the numbers match what your NUT recommends.

I changed my goals like the last post mentioned. I set cal. & 800 since that was the max. I wanted. I set carbs @ 40 since that's the max I wanted. I set protein @ 60 since that was my minimum goal. I let the rest fall where it does. If I keep within those parameters I feel like I'm doing well. My nut. Just says to be aware of eating high protein. She wants us to track but not focus on the numbers so that's why I set them the way I did. It seems to work for me & let's me keep track of how I'm doing.

Mine is set at 800 calories (do not usually hit this).

Protein at 80 grams

Carbs at 40 grams

Fat at 36 grams

I try to stay under on the carbs but not always, it should not hurt to go over on protein.  My calories are usually between 600 -800.

I know I'm probably missing something very simple, but how do you track water on there.

You can also just add it in as a snack - I use the entry for "municipal water" -- that way the calcium that is part of normal tap water is tracked towards my daily calcium goal (it is one of the macros I track).
