Any couples doing this together?

I'm 3 weeks out today from my VSG and my husband had his surgery today.  I'm excited we are doing this together -

He has Type 2 Diabetes and was coming more and more insulin dependent (plus some other health problems) - I can't wait for those numbers and medications to drop.  His surgery went well today.

I'm still in a 14 day stall but meeting with the Nut tomorrow before going to the hospital. Some day that scale will move!  I'm using My Fitness Pal - measuring foods, walking, - i do need more water but doing the best I can at this stage.

Hi "short sleeved Ann"....glad to hear you both are doing well. yes, i am 2 weeks out..and .hubby is scheduled for 4/18..he also has diabetes, with more and more insulin dependent and other issues like your hubby.....i went first so he could see what it would be like, at his request...so i'm the guinea pig wink.  I was hoping he'd reschedule to be closer to my date, but can't due to work....we should be synched up with food stages by mid June.  It's just the two of us in our household...what about you?

There are a number of couples here who have done wls together...I'm sure they will chime in :)

Sophie -

Yes  - our kids are out of the house - so think that part will be easier not cooking for a family.  I admire all of you who are having to cook meals for your family.

We are lucky that this timing worked out for us with my husband's work schedule.  There is never a good time to take off work - is there?

it will be different comparing our calorie needs - he's a big guy 6' 2 and I'm 5'1 but we'll still be protein based & low carb!

My husband and I will be doing this together this summer.  I will have surgery first, and then he'll follow behind, 3 weeks later.  Your situation is similar to ours, except between my DH and me, I am the T2 diabetic with other health issues.

I wish you both well as you both make your way to better health!

My husband had surgery 2 weeks before me. He said if I'd had surgery 1st he'd have chickened out. It was rougher than we anticipated. Especially for him. I'm glad we did it together but women beware. Don't compare your wt. loss to your husbands. My husband had a lot more to lose. He lost 30 lbs. on the pre-op diet. I lost 10. It was frustrating to me. My husband, dr., & nut have all been positive. I've felt frustrated all along the way. He eats all the wrong foods, high carbs, has wine every night, exercises 15 min. 1-2 times a week & keeps on losing. I eat low carbs., high protein, keep my calories low, exercise about 3-4 times a week for 1-2 hours. Do almost everything I know is right. I haven't even smelled any alcohol, much less drank any.  I do have trouble with my water but that's the only place I really know to improve on. I just came out of a stall. I get frustrated.

Sorry for the rant, I just don't want you to face the frustration I've felt. Be aware. Do what your suppose to do. Good luck to all of you.

Perhaps try a smaller water bottle. I know that might sound silly but I have a small 8oz water bottle at my desk and I have no problem getting my water intake because the bottle is small, it doesn't seem as daunting to me to fini**** fini**** while it is cold and then get up to refill it.

I had surgery in December and my husband has made some lifestyle changes as well even though he didnt have the surgery. He has been losing weight right along with me so we are doing it together even though we both arent VSG'ers. I am proud of the effort he is putting in. It has helped lowered his blood pressure. He injured his back 3.5 years and has gained weight since then and me having the surgery really motivated him to make the changes we both needed in our lives. I couldn't be happier.

Congrats to you both and good luck!

My husband had his vsg 4 mos prior to mine. He was type 2 diabetic and was insulin dependent and was supposed to be on hypertension meds but never took them. All his pills were stopped day after surgery insulin was weaned off by 3 weeks out. He was off his cpap by 5 months out. I was type 2 diabetic, hbp, anxiety issues, hypothyroid, and severe GERD. I was on 13 medications a total of 25 pills a day not counting any vitamins and pain relievers for my knee. 1 month out I was down to 3 pills. By 3 months out drs had me off everything except my stomach pill. My cpap pressure was lowered from 17 to currently an 11 soon to probably be lowered again. This surgery has been the best decision or both of us. I am so glad that we did this together because in our 12 yrs of being together we are closer now than ever. We are each others biggest supporter!

DH had his sleeve done 12/11 & I finally got mine 9/12. I started eating what he ate right away. I was navigating through Kaiser when they got busier, so it took a while for me to get through their requirements. We keep each other accountable, and when we go out, we share and usually have left overs. We tease each other that we are a cheap date.

While we do some physical activities together (and moving the body is important), we also do things on our own. I like to ice skate, he likes to run. We do ballroom dance lessons together. I am running a 1/2 marathon on our anniversary weekend in June. He will occasionally skate with me. We also walk our neighbor's dog when we have time.

Doing this together has been great. It is so much easier when you can cook the same meals.
