Weekend away - is it worth a splurge?

I go against the flow on this one. I'd most likely suggest to my hubby that we go to the bakery, have him order whatever he wants and have a bite or two myself.

We got home yesterday from Mexicali, where my hubby got his own VSG. While there I ate reasonably close to normally (for me) but also enjoyed a couple of bites of the desserts (yes, 2) that he had as part of his "last supper," ate beans, toast (dr Campos asked me to so he could get a better pic of my sleeve when he checked to see how it's doing), fruit, sautéed cactus with beans and rice - and lost 2# while down there.

I think that referring to eating a few extra carbs as "waking the carb mister" gives them too much power. Yes, carbs can very easily carry more calories into your day than you want because they're much easier to get down than dense protein, but part of this journey is learning to eat BETTER, not just less by volume.

If you can learn to eat appropriate portions rather than relying on a sensation of physical fullness to stop you, you can eat in the real world instead of always being "on a diet.". Ok, so I peel the batter off my single piece of fish and steal 1-2 fries from whomever I'm eating with at the local fish n chip place. I still feel NORMAL.

Why do I order battered instead of grilled? Because I can eat 1, possibly 2 ounces of grilled fish and I will feel unpleasantly full. If it's cooked in batter and the batter peeled off I can enjoy as much as 3 ounces because it's considerably moister. My Fred likes his food moist.

Now that Barry's sleeved as well, once he's past the refeeding month (liquids, then mushies) we'd most likely WALK to the bakery, choose one thing we'd both enjoy and share it. If my share wasn't fantastic I'd toss it. (I'm not a garbage can, and will only eat sweets if they're exceptionally good)

If it was a fry, I could eat one or two, but I don't bc I don't really get anything out of them.  I'm not really a potato person.  Sugar, however, is my demon.  I just need to be honest about that.  I can do lots of things moderately, but not sugar. I always tell myself it will be a bite or two and it never, ever is.  I don't know how to be satisfied with a bite or two.  I actually get twitchy and anxious.  I don't think I've ever tossed anything sweet that I've been eating in my life.  :)  I think it's wonderful you have a better relationship with sweets than I do.  I envy that.

Being able to toss some things has taken a LOT of self-talk and time. I think the hardest part of my first few months wasn't pain, nausea, hunger or deprivation, but learning to throw out food. I found that incredibly hard and had to have a LOT of talks with myself while standing over the garbage can. I also had many times of having to either dump something nasty on what I was tossing or having to flu**** down the toilet so I wouldn't rescue it later.

I can eat 1-2 fries because although I like them, I've learned to truly hate feeling overfull, which comes (for me) at about 2 bites past full. I hate it enough that I've learned to partition my food as soon as I get it (in a restaurant) and not eat a single bite past the partition. I've also learned to pay very closely to signals that I'm coming close to being full. For me overfull = intense nausea and vomiting - talk about negative reinforcement! It's easier being self disciplined when you're scared you'll throw up.

As to sweets - it's taken me a long time to get to the point of being able to have just a bite or 2, and I'm not perfect. I did have to make a personal rule that if it comes in a box I don't eat it - period. Because I love ice cream I never keep it in the house. Same with pretty much anything sweet or sliderish. We do have popcorn, and Barry makes a batch occasionally, but I fill a soup bowl ONCE and don't allow myself seconds, because for some reason I can eat an embarrassment of popcorn.

Sweets eaten out are very occasional and planned for. (Note the 5 mile walk each way for the shared bakery treat. Lol)

"I would love to have a part of an almond croissant or a couple bites of chocolate crepe"

Now since both of those sound like slider foods... would you REALLY be able to eat only two bites of ONE of them?

Would you feel deprived and mad to toss the rest of it?

If it triggers your "carb monster".. can you tell it no? Or will you talk yourself into many more things the rest of the weekend?

Will you feel utter contentment in just finally going there, having your strictly predefined ONLY two bites?

Or will you spend the entire weekend fantasizing about the bakery and feeling pissy if you choose NOT to go?

Those answers can be quite telling.

No, I really wouldn't be able to eat only two bites especially bc my husband doesn't like either of them.  Yes, it probably would enable me to talk myself into many more things the rest of the week.  I am very persuasive :)  I'd probably just feel sad that I couldn't eat more or I'd say screw and eat until I was sick. No, I won't feel pissy about not going to the bakery.  Haha, that's a great question.  Plus my hubs would probably be irritated to get up early and drive five miles out from the lake (not good roads) just to get something that I will then berate myself for having the rest of the weekend :)

It's a special weekend and a special treat that you'd been eyeing? I would have the treat. You all already know me. I believe in living life. I'm a bit of a foodie and if it's the place I think it is, you know I would. Even in weight loss mode. It's one evening out of five months.

Having said that, I'm likely one of the few odd men out here, but there are times when I make a conscious choice about food and events like this. I always check myself and my mood to make sure.

Besides... I hate to say this because I might get beaten up, but sometimes if I'm in a long stall, throwing some junk food at myself kind of kicks my body back into WL mode.

Hahaha!  I posted about that earlier.  Soooo unpopular, but yes, the days that I've fallen off the wagon (and sometimes let it run over me repeatedly) have actually helped my weight loss.  They've been very rare (thankfully), but it's true.

It's Baguette et Chocolat.  Have you been there?  I've been wanting to try it for ages.

Haven't been there but it's on my "to try" list... I thought that's maybe what it was... your mention of chocolate croissant and lake... hehehe :)

Like I said... I'm unpopular... what else is new? ;)
