So are we supposed to be in ketosis?

I know that its the phase that we burn fat since we've used up all available cards. Isnt this in essence, a low carb diet?

I just bought some keto strips and notice that sometimes I am in ketosis then later that day, I'm not. I didnt know it would vary so much in the day. My wife thinks I'm always in because of my acetone breath. *bleh*

I'd love to know the answer to this too because I just bought some ketostix this weekend after reading another post about "being in the purple zone" and it says I am NOT in ketosis - WTH?!?   Does being a Type II diabetic make a difference on this?   Or to put it another way - what am I doing wrong??

I know I am in ketosis right now on my pre-op liquid diet. I can def feel the difference.

However, I'd like to know the answer to this, as well - do you stay in ketosis after surgery? And for how long are we really supposed to be there? Forever?

It certainly is not a requirement to go low carb and induce ketosis in order to make it to goal.  Many choose to though.  Take the time to research carbs, the glycemic index, the pros and cons of a low carb diet, etc.  Ask your doc.

i'd be interested in knowing this also.  are we in ketosis?  are we in it full time, or just swing in and out during the day? if it good to be in ketosis all the time?  how do you accomplish that?

When you limit your carbs to a certain level (it's different for everybody and even each person depending on their activity level), you go into ketosis and burn fat.  If you want to burn fat, ketosis is a beneficial state to be in.  It is fine to be in ketosis all the time as long as you have fat to burn.  The color on the Keto Stix will vary during the day depending on what you've eaten and your metabolism.

You do not have to be in ketosis to burn fat.  It is one way to accomplish the goal quicker.

I went to my surgeon today for my 6-wk appt.  I talked to him about this "ketosis" thing and he asked me how many carbs I was eating.  I said 40 or less - he said "good girl" and gave me the thumbs up.  But he was puzzled why I'm not getting a positive reading on the ketostix if I'm eating that low of carbs.  So, it's all still a mystery to me!

Thanks for checking on this for us! It sounds like we may or may not be in ketosis and it's ok because our stomach capacity is small. There appears to be two mechanisms here: 1)lower caloric consumption = weight loss. 2)lower carb consumption = fat burn = weight loss. Sounds like we are definitely doing 1) but 2) may enhance weight loss.
