Sleeve surgery and diabetes
I was diagnosed diabetic prior to surgery and had no issues with high sugar post surgery right out of the gate. Please note though that I had a diagnosis based off of being just over the cutoff. I did have issues with blood sugar going low post op, so be aware that you will need to monitor closely.

So...it is Diabetes and Obesity Research day at the University I work at. And I was just sitting in a seminar by a clinician that touched on it. He stated that diabetes medications and/or insulin did not cure diabetes, they only masked the symptoms. The take home was that it really depends on how long a person has been diabetic as to how effective the treatment. He did a study where diabetic patients were subjected to major lifestyle changes. Those that were diabetic less than 2 years, lost more than 6% body mass, engaged in fitness, had a low initial AIC, and were on no blood pressure meds, had a very high chance of going off all medications.
I heard another researcher from Duke say that "bariatric surgery" was the only cure for type II diabetes mellitus. He was specifically referring to RNY, and showed no data on VSG.
I think you have to look at any surgery under this context. I think WLS would accomplish the predictors mentioned above, so it would really depend on how long you were diabetic and what your current values are as to whether you could predict to go off all meds.
THAT SAID...I've read a lot of people here post that they have gone off all or almost all of their medication.
Message me if you want the researchers names to look up their work.
Since surgery I was cut back from metformin, glipazide, levermir and Victoria to 1 metformin a day...2 months later I was taken off the remaining metformin and have been in remission since normally testing between 80-95 in the am...
I was diagnosed diabetic a few years ago. I took Metformin to control my numbers, but didn't really do much else. never really changed my diet or ever checked my blood sugar (bad me!).
I am now 6 months post op and I have been off all meds since surgery. I just had my annual physical with my PCP and I am no longer diabetic!
My A1C used to be in the 8s and 9s. Now it is 5.7 (the normal range!!!!)
Diagnosed type 2 a year before surgery. Was on 1000 mg of metformin a day. Stopped the meds 3 days before surgery and had two shots of insulin right after surgery coz my sugar was in the 300s in recovery.
As of 3 days post op I have had totally normal numbers and an A1C in the 5% club. No meds. All good and in full remission before any weight loss took place. The surgery is not just restrictive but also metabolic.
my a1c s before starting the journey was 7.5 with insulin byetta and 2 1000 mg metaformines , after losing 75 lb pre op it was down to 5.8 with the meds ,
since I came home from the hospital ( they gave me insulin in the hospital) I am only taking 2 1000 mg metiformin , no insulin and no byetta , my a1c was not checked yet but my fasting blood sugars are 90-130 and 2 hours after diner 75-110
my endocrinogist says when I lose more weight I may be off all meds, and he said I didn't need to see him any more that my pcp can take care of my needs now
I was told before surgery that non off the wls was shore to make my diabetes non-symptomatic I have been diabetic more than 12 years and on insulin 2 years
