Pre-Ops! Maintain Muscle Mass Through Your Pre/Post Op Diets
I do a lot of reading and listening to lectures and interviews on nutrition. I listened to an interview by Dr. Mercola (hopefully you know who he is) and Dr. Dominic D'Agostino, a Ph.D. and assistant Professor in the College of Medicine and Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida. The interview was focused primarily on Ketogenic diets and some of the research Dr. D'Agostino was involved in. The guy is pretty sharp and clearly knows his stuff. I was very impressed with him and will be following up on some of his research findings. One of the things he mentioned that really caught my attention was a protocol he recommends to cancer patients as they go through chemotherapy. He recommends Amino Acid Supplements. What he found was that these cancer patients where able to maintain their lean muscle mass through their treatments. Now the study was partially funded by the product he used, but I am familiar with the product he used and it is very good. Anyway it got me thinking that this would be a great way for you to maintain your muscle mass and strength through the pre-op and post-op period and the great part about this is that it should still qualify as clear liquids (although you should certainly run it past your doc/nut).
The product is called Scivation Xtend. It is an amino acid supplement that body builders use to aid in muscle re-building after workouts. I currently use BCAA but when I used up what I have now I am switching to this stuff as I tried a sample a few weeks ago and I liked it. They have a bunch of flavors and you just mix it in with some water. Its 0 carb and 5 calories per serving so it should fit nicely into everyone's plan.
BTW, If you are post-op you can start to use this now to help you build lean muscle mass too!
Here is a link to the product!
Thanks for sharing. I am very interested in this. I am wanting to continue to build muscle and definitely do not want to lose any more muscle. I was and still am, very very disappointed that when I had my recent body composition done at 8 Months post op it reports that I have lost 9 pounds of muscle. I had it done at about 5 months post op and I had 129 lbs of muscle- now it reads out at 120 lbs of muscle- grrrr!! I work out a lot pre and post op. I have been training with roller derby for a couple years now and have been a strong active woman my entire life. Now that I am slimming down- I want bulges of a denser type.
My MD says not to be to concerned with that Tanita machine but the stuff I read online states it is pretty accurate from what I can gather. My goal is to build muscle, I am a woman of tall stature and build, I am 5' 10'' and I want to be a muscle bond roller derby playing, face eating machine.(That's what we say before games - eat all the faces.) The Tanita scale makes me angry anyway because it tells me I need to weigh 153 lbs. If I add my muscle mass, bone mass, and recommended fat mass ( that it itself tells me I should have) I weigh more than 153 lbs. This is also where the BMI tables are flawed. One of the Nurses at my MD office gets this- the other does not- she is pushing for me to get to a "normal" BMI. When I say that is not my goal I get the confused puppy look- imagine ears raise as head angles slighted to the side. I am not looking to get to a "normal" BMI, I am trying to base this on fat % vs Muscle mass for myself. I am starting to doubt Tanita.
So thanks for sharing, I am going to look into this and get on it, Maybe I will give Tanita another whirl for my one year surgiversery and see if there has been an increase in my muscle mass.
