I was self pay. No way in hell was I going to shell out 17k and cheat.  I was also terrified about the fatty liver and knew I had to get it down to help my surgeon properly do his job.

My mom had a lapband put in back in 2002 and because the doctor didn't have her on a pre-op diet he nicked her fatty liver and had to repair it to stop the bleeding.  It's a real thing. And it's real serious.

How many of you cheated on your pre op liquid diet? I want to eat a hard pretzel so bad right now. But I won't!

Nope - I didn't cheat and cheating never crossed my mind.  There were two major reasons for this:

1.  If my surgeon came out and asked me if I followed the diet, I wanted to be able to look him in the eye and say "I certainly did!"

2.  I knew that the pre-WLS liquid diet was a test to my commitment and resolve.  If I couldn't handle those changes for a mere two weeks, how would I ever expect to make permanent lifestyle changes?

Hi Pharmagirl!  We have same surgery date!  My doc only required a 5 day pre-op, but I knew that I needed to get into the mindset earlier than later.  I started shakes and liquids early on the 1st and have 13 days of "rewards" to myself.  Some of these are: get a pedicure, go to a movie, buy a book that I will have the time for pre/post surgery, buy some comfy clothes for post surgery....  I also have begun a nesting process where I have cleared out a whole "off limits" shelf for anyone who isn't having VSG surgery, filled with post-surgery foods.

I miss crunching, so having some SF popcicles or crushed ice seems to work.  You can do this!!

Those are very good suggestions!  I'm going to remember those for when my time comes!

I sent all of my junk food home with my son's girlfriend. I like the "off limits" shelf and I'm going to do that. Although, I don't think my son will want any off it anyway. lol

Good luck on surgery day

I am on the optifast diet as we speak and this is day 4 for me and I have to be on it for 2 weeks. Did your Doctor say you can have lettuce, spinach, green peppers, sugar free jello and sugar free popsicles? Dont cheat because in the end you are only hurting yourself

No, I can not have lettuce, spinach, green peppers.  Only sugar free jello and popsicles.  The nurse did say if I needed to eat a cucumber, that was ok.

I did end up cheating on my liquid diet.I ended up being allergic to the shakes the doctors office sold me.So I had to find ones that had as much protein in them.Well that took me two days.Well I did eat eggs and high protein foods till I found one.So I am not sure it was really cheating but it was what I thought I should do at the time. The liquid diet does get you ready for what happens post op.I got very worried when I wasn't on all liquids and I was scared they wouldn't be able to do my surgery. But the week before the surgery I was on all liquids. It's not easy but worth it.
