Exercise, Nutrition, WLS, and Cooking Q&A - 1/29/2014
Chia seeds are great. I have been adding them to lots of things and greek yogurt is one of them. Chia seeds do swell and sort of form a gel around them. Its ok to eat them in a crunchy state just realizing they will expand a little bit. I doubt you are eating enough of them to worry about hurting yourself with that expansion. Now if you ate nothing but chia seeds and filled up on them, then I would worry but mixed with yogurt, that will go through right away. I do find when I eat chia I definitely feel more satisfied afterward.
Short answer is yes its ok to eat them crunchy.
Sure you can still lose! Sounds like you are doing the right thing. You say you are getting in all your water do you mean 64oz or 100oz? You need to be getting more water. Also since you didn't gain anything back you have to remember your resting metabolic rate is still low compared to when you started the process so the weight is going to come off much much slower. Also try introducing some healthy fats to your diet. For women they help to regulate hormones and out of balance hormones can slow or stop weight loss. So my guess is water or hormones. So just make sure some portion of your calorie budget includes some healthy fats. Also make sure for the time being you log everything you eat, you may find there is something you were not thinking about when you eat (like coffee with cream). You also didn't mention how many carbs you are consuming, you want to make sure you are below 40g per day. You want to fire up the weight loss machine, so go low for right now. If that still does not work at getting things started, we can look at intermittent fasting as a possible way to get it going. My guess is water will be enough.
These are always so informative! :)
My question is this - I saw my program NUT last night, cleared for solids, but discussed many other things with her. One of them being the protein recommendations for my program. We are told to get 50-60 grams of protein a day. I see many people here aiming for more like 80...what is the rationale of more vs. less protein? Am I going to do OK sticking with my program's recommendations, or should I go rogue and up my protein goals? I'm already afraid that I'm a "slow loser" because I'm a revision from LapBand :( I apologize if it's been asked & answered before.
Thanks!
Mary
If she gave you 50-60g for protein, what did she give you for fats? If your NUT is geared more towards a true keto approach, that typically means less protein and more fat. You will be fine sticking with your program, but 80-90 won't hurt either. But you are only telling me once side of the story. What is the calorie goal she gave you? What is the carb goal she gave you. There are 3 macro nutrients protein (4 calories per gram), carbohydrates (4 calories per gram), and fats (9 calories per gram). So 50-60g of protein but only 500-600 calories would workout about right for a nutritious diet with leafy greens. So I am not sure of her rationale without a little more information.
Also how you lost with lap band is no indication of how you will lose with VSG. VSG involves some physical changes that will alter how your body reacts, so I think you will see a much more aggressive weight loss with VSG than lap band. Lapband is very easy to cheat.
