Posted a thread about this, but will ask it here, too. How do you feel about eating back some of your exercise calories during the weight-loss/honeymoon phase of WLS?  I haven't been doing it, but have read a few places that I should be on the basis that your resting metabolism will decrease over time from low calories plus exercise.

People who say that probably don't do the math. I will admit that I have done it, but its not nearly as much as you might think. In a very hard work out for over an hour you MIGHT burn 300-500 calories. The point of exercising is to increase your calorie deficit so you lose weight. Its really about what works for you but if you wan't the optimum scenario you should try to take advantage of the deficit, especially while you still have enough restriction/residual swelling that you are never hungry. Your body will use body fat for fuel so you don't need to worry about replacing calories.

As for resting metabolic rate, I can make a stronger argument for not exercising to keep your resting metabolic rate high from being over weight. Weight lifting yes, cardio no. Cardio exercise improves your cardio capacity which lowers your resting heart rate which in turn brings down your resting metabolic rate. Food really doesn't have that much to do with it unless you are an athlete or a body builder.

Very good points!  I hadn't thought of it that way.

I just want to be clear that I was NOT suggesting your don't exercise. Exercise is a very important part of the curve. Especially if you manage to lose down to your goal you will want to maintain it and fit people have to exercise to stay fit. Once you get down to 20% or less body fat if you want to keep it off if you haven't been exercising food will have a much more major impact on regain if you are not exercising.

Hi Keith!   I'm 2+ months post-op and have a water question.  You drink a ton of water, right?  How much are you able to guzzle at a time?  I've always thought that the sleeve capacity was a limiting factor so I only drink a little at a time, but I'm having a hard time getting past 60-ish ounces per day.  I've read the pyloric valve info from frisco, which made me think that the water runs right through and maybe I can drink more with each gulp without overloading my sleeve.  Thoughts?  You're a real inspiration and I appreciate that you stick around to help out us newbies. :)  Thanks!

I can get a fair amount down in a single swig. Not a whole bottle or anything but 4 or 5 ounces. Yes water goes right through but its a pretty small hole so it does take a few mins to get through. I try to hit 100oz per day of water. I drink before I leave the house (16.9 oz during my workout and then another 20oz of my post workout drink). I take 4 16oz bottles with me and they must be gone before I get home. Then during the evening another 2 to 4 bottles depending on activity.

You are more likely to vomit up the water than overload your sleeve. Its rather unpleasant and it is uncomfortable to drink too much. Sometimes a single small swallow will do it. Also depends if there is any food in there too, so make sure you are empty but start by taking a sip and keep sipping until you start to feel it. Then you will know about how much you can hold at one time. Every substance is different too. Just because you can hold 4 oz of water doesn't mean you can hold 4 oz of dense protein. 2 to 3 oz of chicken will hurt for me where as 4 or 5 oz of water is just fine. Shrimp seems like I can eat a lot before I feel it.

Frisco has really good advice on under eating your sleeve and his stuff on the pyloric valve should be required reading for VSG patients. So you've started with some good material.

I am always here for you guys, you can always ask for me here, PM me, or email me at [email protected]
