I just had the best news of my life, when I got approved from my insurance company yesterday. Then I went to get my blood work done and meet with the anesthesia team. I only had yogurt that morning, and had nothing to eat till like 7 pm. I'm not a diabetic, I never have been, and it does not run in my family. I got a call this morning at 6:30am from the hospital that my blood sugar level was 42 when it shouldn't be under 60. She asked me if I was lightheaded, dizzy, nauseous..etc. Other wise being tired because its early, no I'm perfectly fine. I have been dieting and exercising for the past couple of months, and have tried to cut sugar out of my diet. The nurse wants me to go to see my PCP, and get blood work taken, but I have an appointment with my surgeon today. I'm going to tell him, but I'm super scared. Do you think my surgery will be delayed? That really can not happen!

I don't think they'll stop your surgery because people who's isrreally high still preceded with surgery. ..good luck

Yea I don't think it will effect surgery, I made way too many phone calls to nurses and doctors, that told me not to freak out that it will be fine! Thanks!

#1 I wouldn't let them cancel/change anything until you had a re-check.  #2 they'll monitor your BS in the hospital after surgery and add glucose to your IVs if needed and #3 you might have to monitor your blood sugar after to be sure you aren't dealing with hypoglycemia in the long term.

Yeah I think they are just going to recheck my blood, they just said to make sure I have a nice lunch and the levels should be right back to where they should be. Thank you!

I think the lab made a mistake.  Early post-op I had a couple of glucose drops.  At 42, you would have been extremely confused (so weird), light headed sweating profusely, shakes, heart palpitations, . . .  and finally an ambulance would have been called.  If your blood sugar can drop this low, you need to learn how to take care of yourself.  I do now and pray that if I ever go unaware that someone may be around me or find me if I am not able to help myself.  I have glucose tablets around but mostly I try to make sure I don't have straight junk that turns into sugar quick.  Protein!

Take good care and I hope it is just an error.

having low bs can be a precursor to becoming diabetic, certain tumors, pancreatitis, pituitary problems or just after a huge carb filled meal.....going through this right now with hubby.
