PTA South Africa
I have had the RNY and knowing what I know now I would recommend you go to a center specializing in bariatric surgery.I believe Kingsbury Hospital in Cape Town has one.I am saying it is better going with that...because I know of a girl that had it at N1 city Cape Town and the surgery was done and she had to cope on her own...no counseling, no pre- or post-op diet.Everything I belive to be necessary.Good Luck!!
Hi! I am going to have RNY in Pretoria (well lytletion, actually) on May 5. Prof Heinne van der Walt at Unitas hospital is my surgeon. He has a great program with a psychiologist, nutritionist, etc. He is also a world renowned laproscopic surgeon. His main practice is repairing hernias and ulcers, I think, but since this RNY was originally used as a solution to stomach ulcers, etc., he is more than qualified. He does about 8-10 a week. There is another person at Unitas, a woman, I believe, that also ahs a program. She is a endocronologist and works with a different surgeon. When I enquired with her office they told me the surgeon only does 30/year.
To get in Prof van der Walt you need to sign up for an info session and then they will set up your appointments from there. He has a website at www.surgeondoc.co.za that focus on the otehrside of his practice but does have his contact info.
Drop me a line if you want more info.

HI Cari - I live in Johannesburg and am booked to see a prof Tessa Van Der Merwe - I think they also do the lap band procedure (which is the one which I am interested in) at Unitas. I also have to see a psychatrist, dietician & then another doc who does blood tests and some other tests. What is a RNY? I think the lap band op is around R75k? How much weight have you lost and would you consider your procedure? PLEASE let me know what procedure etc you have done and some tips as all these sites are great but no one ever gets back to me with info? Thanks a ton - Paula!
