I have been an interpreter for the Deaf now 13 years. I absolutely love my job and I am so glad the profession chose me! I was Deaf taught and I hold National Certification (NAD 4). I interpret mainly post-secondary and do a LOT of freelance. I am always on call at the hospitals and especially the state mental hospital. I do Legal interpreting also. I started in Texas and was very very active in the Deaf Culture. That was the best way for me to learn as I now know all the idioms and "slang" and most people mistake me to be deaf when I am going at it. Heck.. my ex husband is even deaf but I was an interpreter long before I had met him. I absolutely love my job!!!! They didn't even have an interpreter training program when I learned it so long ago! What a surprise to find an ASL message board! I've been an interpreter for many years and am nationally certified. I am also a CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) and (obviously) a WLS patient. What a cool little board! Cheryl

Hi, I also have been learning sign language. I abandond my 15 year career as a travel agent to go back to school for ASL interpreter. I regret now that I didn't do it sooner. It would be a lot easier without the stress of a full time job, husband who travels a lot for work, and an 8 year old. I took time off from school after a year. I just couldn't do it. I decided my health was more important, so now I'm scheduled for surgery in April. I hope to be back in school at least on a part time basis next fall. Hey it may take me a long time to do it, but I'm going to do it. It has been a life time dream of being an interpreter, I wish I would have done it years ago, but there isn't anything I can do about that now. Just keeping moving forward!! Janel

Hi Shari, I thought I'd take a peek in here and see if anyone ever writes...and there you were! I have many very patient Deaf friends who correct my signing and encourage me. I have been slowly improving my signing, but wish I could do a lot more. I'm a mental health therapist (nurse practitioner) and would love to fill an obvious gap in the Deaf community around here. (Can you imagine going to a therapist and having to have an interpreter with you? What an invasion and inconvenience!) I think the only way I'm going to become fluent enough in ASL though is to go back to school and take the interpreting course. It's 3 years long! I've hedged on doing that, but I started thinking about it 2 years ago...I'd be almost finished by now, darn it! So, with my new life now, I think I'll pursue new goals. Cheers, Rusty

Hi Jeannie. I have been learning sign language off and on for the last 20 years. I now have a friend who is an interpreter so I am getting a lot more practice!
