Hey has anyone had expierence challenging a NCOER? Hubby is challenging his last few ones since he found out that his chain of command has been comparing him against the other soldiers of the same rank within their platoon and apparently, he is supposed to be compared to the other medics of the same rank in the ENTIRE Army... no wonder why they have been kind sad... GRRR... I am freaking out, wondering if the fall out from this will cause us to get a crappy reassignment?! The fall out isn't supposed to hurt you, but when you make waves it always does. But if you it's going to hurt you, then do it, but before you do.....make sure your claims are valid and strong if they are not, then don't waste yours and others time.

Thankfully, the points and claims are valid and being made by other NCOs and Officers on his behalf. Someone else is the one who pointed out to us that there was a serious discrepency in matters (we had always suspected but never knew it for sure). I guess someone is finally ready to stand up and say something.... i know they are defending him as an individual but they are also using this situation to fix something that is broken; with how my husband's position (the slot) falls into the greater sceme of things for the unit so that no one in the future will get stuck like this again. Anyways, thanks for the advice.

Jamie, From what I understand he is compared with other NCO's. My husband showed me a NCOER and tried to explain it to me. There is only one place where his job as a Medic is rated on the NCOER and the rest of the form is based on his duties as an NCO. From what you have said he is being rated like he is suppose to be. Hope this helps! Becky P.

I guess I should have never asked this question since I was not prepared to give all the details and our "evidence" on this board... LOL! Anyways, part of the problem is that they told him to his face that he will never be the leader THEY want him to be, they don't care that all of the other officers and NCOs that he actually works with on a daily basis (My hubby works independently at a school at the other side of the base) sing him praises, they don't see him ever becoming "like the others in the section" to use their words... apparently we are not the only ones complaining... there are three others about do do the same thing we are or just give up and voluntarily leave the unit (they are waiting to see what happens to us....LOL... go figure).... sad, isn't it?! One thing that just ticks me off with his section is that there is no counseling before, after or during an NCOER. It is slapped together last minute just because "it is due" and they often have the person being evaluated write their own dang NCOER! Then they make changes to it until they are satified with it. He asks what he can do to improve and they tell him flat out he needs to figure that out on his own! Or they tell him to ask the other NCOs and when he does and they all say he is doing fine and that all he could possibely do is improve his PT score! WTF? How is he supposed to improve if he does not know what he is doing wrong? I guess it would be easier to understand the situation if I had disclosed more details.... like that he is not in a average unit doing an adverage job, compared to average army medics... his job, training, awards and missons put him at the cream of the crop by "the nature of the beast." So when you rate NCOs in that situation against each other instead of the entire army it tends to make some of the NCOERs appear worse or better in the eyes of the regular army. We had never looked at it that way until it was pointed out by "regular army" officers! For example you take these guys' NCOERs and put them in highest to lowest score order and then try to slip them into a stack of regular army NCOERs, some of them will appear towards the bottom of that pile even though the soldiers about them could not survive a day in their shoes. That is why the rating comparison should be done same rank- same MOS in the entire army instead of same rank- same MOS in you little tiny section (6 guys in our situation). Anyways, I am begining to ramble and whine and I hate that.... I just wanted to know if anyone else had been through a contestment before. All this uncertaintly and waiting is killing me. I am just relived that my hubby is not the one officially putting in the paperwork, the NCOs and officers that he works with at the school are submitting it on his behalf! So it is definitly not a waste of time, apparently the complaints I have had for years (and kept to myself) are valid concerns! Thanks for the help! Jamie
