Hi Melissa!!
You know my daughter taught me this the hard way as they do know more than they let on. Lauren is 3, and about 4 months ago she was giving me a VERY hard time about getting her diaper changed. I got so mad I said to her, ( I really didn't think she would understand) Well then little miss if you don't want to get your diaper changed then stop going in your diaper, act like a BIG girl and pee on the potty! Because I'm TIRED of changing YOUR DIAPER!! Well she gets up and says really loud OK MOM, Runs into the bathroom and sat on the potty. Now she is not 100% trained but does pee on it. Hope all is well with you!!
Hugs

Hi Melissa... My week has started out GREAT! I got my approval letter yesterday!
Now I just need to wait for the surgery center to call with my date.... trying to be patient, waiting for that phone to ring!
How old is Noah? My children are 8... so our potty training days are way behind us.. thank goodness! But, I remember those regressions.. no fun.
What problems are you having with your medical group? Is it insurance that you're fighting with? Hope it all works out for you...

Hi Cherl!!
So nice to hear from you!!! I was worried about my kids too. Try maybe a social story about surgery. Our kids really understand more than they let on. " We as mom's know this" LOL!! I wish more people new about this board, and would post more. I try to look at this board everyday.
Take care, and sure look forward to talking to you again...

Hi Melissa and Kristin!
It's great to see some posters here! I live in Raleigh, NC and have 8yo twins - a NT daughter and my son has HFA. I'm also pre-op and I'm not TOO worried about how they'll handle my surgery... although I know my son will no like that I'm not home for a few days!! He's very much a "momma's boy" which is fine by me!!
Nice to meet everyone... Hope we get to chat more....

Hi Melissa!
I'm Kristin, I have 2 with Autism. My daughter is 3 and my son is 2. I have a 4 year old with possible aspergers. My kids did pretty well when I had my surgery. I was in for 5 days. I had my surgery open it was hard the first week as I didn't have any help. My husband could not take off much time. Just take it day by day. Maybe a social story would help your son? Best of luck to you!!
Hugs!!

Topic: RE: How did your WLS impact your autistic child?
Mea,
My kids are pretty young I don't think they really even noticed I had surgery to tell the truth. As for the behaviors could it be that he just went back to school? Trasition problems? We are dealing with that right now with my little girl who is 3 years old w/ Autism. She just started back to pre-school. I hope they can adjust his meds. I have heard that kids have put weight on with that med that he was on. Hugs to you Mea!!
I'm an Email away if you ever want to chat!!

Topic: How did your WLS impact your autistic child?
Hi everyone
- I was lucky enough to stumble upon this forum, I didn't know it existed 5 minutes ago
. I have a 12 year old son with PDD NOS/ Aspbergers, depending on which specialist you ask. I had my surgery on 7/12/04 and so far have lost 50.5 lbs
. My son and I discussed the surgery extensively before, and other than him thinking that I would come home from the hospital skinny, he seemed to have a good understanding of what would happen. I was in the hospital for 2 days and have had absolutely no complications, thank God. My son's behavior has been off the wall inappropriate. I'm sure most of us in this forum know what that's like- inappropriate language, revisiting issues that were settled long ago, reverting to childish behaviors, etc. He's driving me crazy
. And now the icing on the cake, 2 teachers at my son's school told me he is obsessing on another student with inappropriate behavior. Oh joy
. A few years ago in 5th grade, my son began having similar issues but was able to verbalize what the problem was. He was mainstreamed all thru elementary school, and in the 5th grade, the academics became just too hard and were going ahead too fast for him. So more pull-out/SPED time was arranged, and we did short term medication (Risperdal) and he was fine. Here we are 2 years later, the same behaviors are creeping in, yet my son is unable to verbalize the problem or help himself. We are going back to the psychologist who helped us a great deal the last time things got out of hand. Risperdal is no longer an option for my son because he gained a lot of weight last time and tends to be heavy anyways. Well, I guess I just needed to get it all off my chest
. Any advice appreciated, and thanks for listening
.

Jen,
Hi, so nice of you to post on this board! I have 2 with Autism, Lauren is 3 and Evan is 2. I have a 4 year old with possible aspergers. Here in Pa we are lucky, we have inhome therapy that the state pays for. Evan gets 30 hours per week, and Lauren gets 25. I know that many others states don't pay for this type of service. We try to do fun things with our kids. Lauren loves to play with shaving cream, and paints. She has HFA, While Evan is doing ok, but not as well as I thought. He does nothing but stim on wheels, and objects. He does do other stuff when he has therapy.
I have no idea on how to slow down these stims. He just started to head bang, does it only when he is mad!! If you have any ideas for me that would be great!!
Thanks
Kristin
Topic: RE: Not much activity in this neck of the woods...
Hi Kathy,
I bet Olivia is wonderful!! I finally got my son potty trained right before his 5th birthday - he still has accidents, though. It will happen eventually. #2 seemed to freak out Joey too but he finally got it.
Joey is hyperaffectionate to me and his dad and warming up to his sister also so I know what you mean with that one - sometimes its like, ok, enough hugging already! now that he is warming up to my daughter (who is bipolar) his hugging really drives her nuts!
Thanks for responding, and welcome to the board!
-Sherrie
