Hi Everybody! I'm almost 8 wks out and the weight loss is going great, but I'm having a hard time eating anything. I'm nauseous all the time and cannot drink protein drinks without dry heaves. Yogurt and cottage cheese also make me sick and I haven't been able to eat chicken or beef without throwing up. I've had a second barium swallow as of last week and the radiologist said "everything looks beautiful, I can't tell you why you're sick." My surgeon told me to go back to clear liquids, but I'm so weak I can barely sit upright. Does anybody have any suggestions? I'll try anything... Thanks for your help. Phyl 414/335.8/???

Hi Phyllis, You poor thing - I can imagine how exhausted you must feel. I personally haven't had teh surgery yet but I have heard from many people, including my nutritionist, that Quesy Pops have helped them tremendously. It's from Bariatric Advantage and made specifically for those who have the surgery. Here's a link http://bariatricadvantage.com/products_BAQPCIN.htm Hope this helps - and maybe others have some ideas from what they have done. Pam

Hi Phyllis, Sorry to hear your having a hard time. I've never thrown up since surgery. Maybe you should try a different protein drink. Which ones have you tried? I used to drink EAS Advantage protein drinks. They are already made. I now drink Protein Delite. I love the vanilla very berry and the chocolate coconut. I had to order those online. I hope you get better. It is so important that you get your protein in. Take care, Diana 379/173/?

Hi Diana-- I have had the EAS protein drinks and for the first few weeks, I could keep them down. I've also tried the Bene Protein unflavored powder and it makes me sick. The mere "idea" of drinking a protein drink now makes me feel sick. I've even had nausea from drinking water! I know I need the protein, but I CANNOT get it down without dry heaves, which totally exhausts me. I have no desire to eat anything and I'm just getting weaker and weaker. I did so well upon my initial release from the hospital, but the last few weeks have been absolutely brutal. Thanks for your concern. Phyl

Phyl, I know that nauseous feeling, I swear I felt like I was pregnant for the first month. It was awful. I almost lived on sugar free popsicles. I ate them all the time. They cooled me off and felt good going down. Everytime I felt ill I'd grab one. I had my hubby running to the store to keep me in stock. It's Popsicle Brand and they come in a yellow box and have three flavors. Nothing fancy just plain pops. I thought I was going to cry when my husband and grandmother (trying to be sweet) kept forcing pureed chicken and beef on me. It was soooo gross. I called a friend of mine how had just had her surgery and she said "Jamie don't eat that if it looks bad you won't eat it"..so from that day on I subsisted on cheese, popsicles, p-butter, and occasionally deli turkey. It passed for me but I thought while it was going on that I had made the BIGGEST mistake of my life. Along the way I sipped juice for constipation, drank propel or plain water depending on how I felt that day. I didn't do so hot with my protein either. My Nutritionist wasn't too happy with my intake but I just couldn't do the shakes anymore. I TRIED soo many and it was just a waste of my time and my money. I think it was probably sometime last month when I decided to try the shakes I'd be drinking before surgery. Isopure...they come in a HUGE container and lots of flavors but I've only tried strawberry and chocolate. I add milk to mine because it's better tasting than water and since I'm still not getting in enough calories it's fine. I've also found that there isn't a HUGE difference in 2% vs. fat free so I use 2%. Honestly and I know some people will disagree with me but I'd try the popsicles and just let the protein come in time. There's no sense in making yourself ill everyday trying to get it down. Just give yourself time and try a few things to see what works for you. I bought sliced cheese really thin and just tasted a few little bites at first and the p-butter just a tiny little spoon and just kinda took little bits here and there. Oh I almost forgot..don't know if you like this or not but I drank A LOT of it my first month..hot tea. It really soothes your stomach. I made it with Splenda or Equal and even put a little cream in it. It really helped alot. I hope you start feeling better soon. If you have any questions or just want chat please email me. HUGS, Jamie

Have you tried sipping warm liquids? Mint tea can help and warm liquids help disolve the mucus buildup in your intestinal track that may be causing you to feel sick. Try it when you get up and about 30 minutes before you eat. Shellie

Hey Phyllis. Bless your heart is all I can say. I know exactly how you feel. I went for months feeling like that. I couldnt drink protein anything, eggs, chicken, tuna, yogurt and cottage cheese on given days. I thought I was gonna be that way forever. I was the type to have come home and done housework I done so well surgery wise. But the nausea was a pain. So all I can say is take it slow and try your best at what you can eat. Some of us get nausea and some dont. I can tell you I was a poster child for hurling lol... But now its a whole new ballgame. I was so bad that it was a chore getting down my meds and vitamins. I had the dreads of it because I would gag when they were in my mouth lol. But as I said. Try your best to tolerate what you can to get the protein in but if not. Please keep hydrated.. Thats a major issue to for us.... Hugs Marge

Phyl, Several of my friends have had the same problem and they had to switch to profect protein. Its clear and in its the purist form of protien u can buy. My husband loves it for his wt training too. I will share a bit from a letter I recieved and a link to buy some. I have ordered a case for me and my surgery is on July 12. We recommend this product to so many ppl. Its amazing how great it works. I wish I had stock in this company but I assure u I dont. We buy ours from ubid.com its similar to ebay. u can buy it directly for the company at profect.com. This company has several adds on the OH site I also forgot to mention one of the biggest pluses. Its 25 grams of protien in less than 3 ozs of liquid Mariah To give you a real world example, look at a raw egg when you first crack it open. The "white" of the egg is not actually white; it is translucent (almost clear). The "white" is mostly protein, and it is in its original, biologically active form. When you cook the egg, the "white" becomes white and opaque. What happened is the heat (i.e. pasteurization process) caused the protein molecules to unfold (i.e. break apart) and then reconnect in an unnatural manner. The protein is now denatured. The egg will now be difficult for the body to digest and absorb (as evidenced by gastrointestinal distress experienced by many people who eat eggs). You will notice that Profect is translucent (you can see through the Profect vial, even though there is an extraordinary amount of protein in a very small volume). This is because the protein in Profect is still in its natural, biologically active structure.
