All of you know my long road to fighting my insurance company Well, that came to an end last week and it was, well, another disaster created by my lawyer. However, our operations director advised me to look into my retirement fund - it seems that 401k/403b's can be used for unreimbursed medical expenses, hardship cases. No need to pay back, and I don't have to pay the 10% early withdrawal fee - just state and federal taxes. I decided this was SO worth it - I figure that I might as well use the money for something good like this... if I waited and didn't have surgery who knows if I would even be alive to enjoy it! I just got word that it's a go and I have the money for surgery!!!!! Doin a happy dance I'm still processing this -I just can't comprehend it! Now, if my doctor would just call me back - I'm itching to go!

Thanks Deb! I feel pretty good about it - my boss was amazing, spent half the day working on getting it all together. He's a great guy and totally supportive. I am never going to sleep tonight - I'm too excited

Thanks Margaret, I can't believe it is actually happening. I look at it as investing in myself, very much worth it. I plan to be hiking in the himalayas at the age of 70 - if I have less money, then I will just sleep in a hut instead of a hotel

Hey Lori, I'm not sure if it could be used for plastic surgery, although they only state that it is for "unreimbursed medical bills," nothing too specific about what type of surgery. I know that it is legal, but some plans don't allow it - it is up to the company to set the fund rules. I was lucky and my company allows it - actually, my boss was extremely excited for me when we figured I could do this. I work in a GREAT place! I do have to give them documentation stating that insurance wouldn't pay, that my doctor recommended it and how much the surgery would cost. And I will have to give them copies of all my bills - they just need that if they are ever audited. Check with your HR department - they just may be able to help you out. It's a nice option to have!
