I could use a little advice or it would be just good to know someone else has gone thru this Is anyone having excessive periods since having surgery? I have had alot of minor problems. When I was gaining wt and pre surgery I stopped having a period after I passed about 350 lbs. So for a yr I didnt have one. I didnt realize this was a problem. To me it was great not having to mess with it. Now... I had surgery on July 12. Had my first period on the 14th, then again on the 25th, then again on Aug 8 and then for a fourth time on Aug 29th. I called my gyn and told him and he gave me 4 different options I could pick from. One was hormones, birth control pills and one was another pill and the forth was surgery.... My questions is has anyone else experienced any of this? If so have u dont anything about it. I was just hoping it would regulate itself all on its own...but so far it hasnt. Right now I still feel great...cramping is worse than I ever remembered pre surgery but Im still loosing wt and feeling very healthy. Just dont know what to do. Mariah 394/320/160 down 74 lbs

Hi Mariah, Sadly I do have experience in this matter. Like you, I had almost non-exsitant periods pre-surgery (poly-cysitic ovary disfunction) which I understand is common with SMO gals. My period returned while I was in the hospital (I was not prepared). It would not stop..and the pain was..well, bad. I had other complications, Blood clot on my lung..so I had other issues to deal with also. They gave me a hormone to stop my periods, but it did not work. I am now 9 months out and I've got to tell ya that things do get better. Things have regulated themselves pretty well now. My gyno would always tell me that if I lost the weight, that my cycle would become more normal..and I would think, yeah, right..easy for you to say. Hang in there Mariah. I only took the hormores for one cycle and they didn't work. Things mellowed out in the end. Congradulations on your huge weight loss!!! Hugs Ginger

Mariah, I was having terrible heavy painful periods 3 years ago. It was so bad I could not leave the house for days. I finally had uterine ablation. (they use some sort of metal net to cauterize the uterine lining) It was relatively simple procedure - no pain, and NO PERIODS since. I LOVE IT!! Julie

So ironic that you posted this... I have been having lots of the same problems. They say mine are attributed to fibroid tumors in the uterus coupled with "old uterus syndrome" (I made that up)... but basically old uterus' have lots of bleeding. I too, am curious as to whether this is a side-effect of surgery and whether surgery is the best option. I have tried the pills. They are also telling me that the cramping is the body's way of trying to stop the bleeding. (sorry to get so graphic... just haven't figured another way to say it)...Thanks for bringing this up B

Forgive me for being so lax in responding to your post, but I've been away from my computer for a while... I had surgery in May, and had a period for three months afterwards. It was very light, but still a pain in the a@@. I had just started on the Depo provera shot before surgery as my surgeon told me that I would no longer absorb my birth control pills. I am currently 18 weeks out and in the midst of a normal period (5 days and it's gone.) I recommend the Depo shot...it lasts 12 weeks and it's relatively inexpensive and helps to regulate your period (some women don't menstruate at all!) I think the prolonged post surgical period is just another way our bodies are saying "What the heck is going on?!" Talk to your surgeon and see if he has any concerns and then call your ob/gyn and ask about the depo shot. *hugsnluv" Phyl 414 pre op 390 day of surgery 305 today
