High Risk Patient.
Dear Group,
I am trying to gain info about finding a doctor that does WLS on high risk patients. My father is over 300 pounds, insulin dependant, kidneys are failing (working at only 40%) and had open heart surgery 2 years ago. He is 63 and has basically given up. I plan on having WLS sometime soon and I think this has encouraged him alot. Problem is.... Where do I find a surgeon near Salt Lake City UT that will approve Medicare? I have read many post from the Utah forum. Those that have Medicare are going to N. Las Vegas NV for their surgery. My dad has no trouble about this distance. He is just scared. (He will never admit to this though).
I would love to hear from others that were High Risk. I feel that if knows there are others that at one time suffered like he is his fears will lessen.
Sincerely,
Kelli

I'm not from Utah or anything, but I just wanted to tell you that I feel for your father. I will be praying that things will go in the right direction. I know all too well what its like to be afraid (as i am still preop). But your poor father can't even find a surgeon. I will definitely keep you and him in my prayers. Good luck to you and keep us posted.
Your father needs to discuss with his doctors whether or not he is able to have weight loss surgery. He may be at too high of a risk for it. He also may be better suited for the lap band. I am so sorry his health is so poor. My mom's is and I know how painful that is for you. I will pray for you both. Hugs, Loris
Kelli,
I live in Salt Lake City. My doctor is Christina Richards at Salt Lake Regional Hospital. I would have him do a consult with her. She is really terrific. I started at 384, had high blood pressure and real mobility problems, but, other than that was not particularly high risk. But, there other patients who are in my support group that were certainly high risk. I do think she has a good program.
