my dr wants me to have fobi pouch or duen switch, because of my weight. my insurance only covers rny, and the leftoveris 5g's. i can't afford this. he seems to think long term will be achieved with the pouch or switch better than rny. any thoughts?

I would explain to the Dr I couldn't afford it and insurance wouldn't pay for it then if he still insisted I would try to find another DR. My surgeon educates everyone on the surgeries he preforms and then makes you make the choice. Jan

Hey Okemi, He probably suggested the Duodenal switch because it is a great surgery for those who are super morbidly obese ( you can check my profile for more infor). But if he examined your medical history, your weight loss attempts, and your family's history of obesity, and based on that he recommended those 2 surgeries, i would be so quick to sho sho his suggestions away. From my understanding the Fobi pouch is the RNY with a silicon band around the stoma (for the most part), won't they cover this? Personally, I know I could not have afforded the 5k, I'm disabled, but there are many companies who would finance WLS if you don't have a 401K to draw from etc. I know this is a very difficult decision, I hope that you have peace about whichever surgery you choose to have. Scott PS Many DSers have fought their insurance companies and won in appeals to have the DS over the RNY. It is a valid surgery, medicare now pays for it, and there is no reason for an insurance company not to pay for it, esp. if your doctor recommends it.
