I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST THE PETER PAN KIND... DIDNT KNOW EVEN THE WALMART BRANDS ALSO... IT HAD A 2111 JUST AS PRETTY SITTING ON THE TOP OF THE LID... I BUY THERE BRAND BECAUSE MY GRANDCHILDREN LOVE IT SO MUCH AND ALWAYS WANT SOME WHEN THEY ARE OVER HERE..... WE HAVE THE PETER PAN COMPANY EIGHT MILES FROM HERE IN SYLVESTER. ITS THE PEANUT CAPITAL OF THE WORLD AND HAVE SHUT THE FACTORY DOWN SHUT..... THE NEWS SAID LASTNIGHT THEY ARE GOING OVER IT WITH A FINE TOOTH COMB. SO YALL OUT THERE MAKE SURE TO CHECK AND SEE NO MATTER WHAT NAME BRAND YOU HAVE. THERE ARE TWO LIL BOYS THAT ARE VERY SICK FROM IT ONE TOWN OVER FROM THE ILLNESS. HAD DONE TEST ON THEM AND YES WAS CONFIRMED... SO AROUND HERE THATS MAJOR WHEN COMES TO PEANUT ANYTHING.... SO BE CAREFUL... SURE UPSET ME THINKING AFTER THE FACT THAT I COULD HAVE MADE THEM VERY SICK,

Karma....What would life be without it? 250lbs gone! 410/160... Life's sweet!
I had that peanut butter too! I keep a jar at my desk for those times when I forget my lunch and yesterday checked it. Sure enough, it was the bad batch. But get this, I've eaten most of it! Of course I only eat a couple of tablespoons at a time, but I don't recall getting sick from it, so I guess it's ok. Even then, I just threw it away.
Glad to hear those grandchildren are ok! Hope those two little boys are ok too. It's kind of scary - how in the world does salmanella get into peanut butter!
Hugs, Dont beat yourself up Marge. It could happen and is happening to a lot of us.We only do the best we can. I know it probable dont help much but At least they didnt get sick. Prayers for you and your community. Hugs marie

Marge, how were you supposed to know the peanut butter was exposed to salmonella? It's not like you intentionally tried to poison your grandchildren! (Although I'm pretty sure my nana was trying to kill me by forcing me to eat cauliflower when I was a kid).
I hope they give the peanut butter factory a thorough scrubbing -- since peanuts aren't a normal host for salmonella, it has to be some sort of contaminant at the plant, hiding either in the machinery or in the jars.
When I was able to work, I worked for CDC doing disease investigation. I miss it, and I kind of wish I was working on the peanut butter investigation. It's so highly unusual that it would be very educational and fascinating. When I was posted to WA State, we had two people die from Legionnaire's Disease, and we were able to trace it back to the potting soil they used for houseplants. (It's a good idea to wear a mask when using potting soil so you don't inhale the dirt particles).
An interesting note is that Peter Pan Peanut Butter is an "approved" peanut butter for families on WIC, so I wonder if this will change once the outbreak is abated.
