The Gym is open Wednesday
Hi Lorraine -
I went to the water aerobics class today. I was pretty up most of the day, and ended up with a big let down. I had my 3 month appointment today. I was so excited because I was hoping to be below 290. I weighed in at 288 -- a 56lb loss in 11 weeks. I'm not really 3 months post op until the 30th. I did tell the surgeon I saw, not the one who did my surgery, that I was concerned that I can eat about 3/4 - 1 cup of food on average, and wondered if that was too much. He told me that he was disappointed in my loss and that he expected me to have lost more like 70 lbs in these first 3 months. He told me to start to exercise, because I obviously wasn't doing enough of that, and that I MUST stop the junk food. I was shocked. We have no junk food in our home -- we basically don't allow it to come in, and I am exercising. My body composition read out shows that my "fat mass" dropped like 60lbs since my consult before surgery (I was 7.5lbs higher in weight), and my "fat free mass" - muscle, bone, etc had gone up. I'm obviously burning the fat and added some muscle.
I was so hurt and cried this afternoon thinking "will I ever get praise from a doctor about how I'm doing weight wise?" Last week my primary doctor told he was very pleased with my weight loss, and I expected my surgeon followup to be the same. My heart aches tonight.
That's it! No more visits with that surgeon. if your regular surgeon cannot see you, then reschedule for a time when he can. The nerve of that guy making all of those clearly erroneous assumptions. apparently he did not get the memo that every person loses weight at a different rate. Not only that but I guess he forgot that when people exercise as much as you do that they build muscle which weighs more than fat. What a jerk... Want me to go smack him around for ya?
Jesus is so good to me; I couldn't ask for a better friend, protector, leader, savior!
I am so hurt to read this from you. Our surgeons should be supportive however first of all the person you saw wasn't your doctor. Second you have done a wonderful no matter what you have lost. You just don't worry about what that man/woman said and know that here on this board you will get all the love and support you need. Keep up the good work.
Lorraine
Hi, Lorraine! On Wednesday, I did physical therapy for my knee after work - various exercises for quads, hamstrings, hip abductors, and hip adductors. After I finished with PT, I went next door to the gym and did 40 minutes on a Cybex elliptical, which has a different design and motion than the Precor machines I usually use. Anyway, it was awkward at first but I got the hang of it and stuck in there for 40 minutes.
My weight is sitting in the same place, so I need to shift something up with my food and/or exercise to get things moving again. Perhaps I'll add another 15-20 minutes on another cardio machine to see if that get's things going!
