From the replies so far- it seems that most average around 400-450 and lose around 140- 180 the 1st  9 months and then the slow down comes- Is that pretty accurate? Dolly

I wasn't 400 but I was close enough  - last July I weighed 374 pounds, and now almost 10 months later I'm down to 211, that's a total loss of 163 pounds so far! My DR told me I had slowed down a bit, that by 9 months the loss of body fat should be around 75% (that's the average), mine was 69%.   I was still happy! I still want to loose about 60-70 more. But then I'm only 5'3".

I started at 416....and am at 256 right now....9 months out. So that is 160 lbs. My dr wants me to get to 140...but at 5'6" I don't agree...I am aiming at 150-160...but anything with a 1 in the beginning sounds good to me!

Thanks Dolly! Yep I have about 72-90 to get to normal range for my height. And you are correct, I can't allow myself to get discouraged. But I have to say this journey definitely has had a lot of ups and downs for me. However, I plan to see this to at least my "high" normal if nothing else.  Thanks a bunch for your words of confidence...

Triple C Your beginning weight is the inspiration that people like me who are only 4 months out and wondering if they will ever lose the first 100 lbs need. I always want to read the profiles and post of people who came from where I coming from. It lets me know that I just need to keep fighting and I just might win this battle. Like you, kix, Lorraine, Wanda, Jandell and others are doing. This may not be the busiest forum but it is where I feel most comfortable and most understood when I express my feelings.    You are doing a great job!!!!

Hi Tricie, Thank you for your words of encouragement. I know how you feel and have felt the same way many times throughout my not so long yet, journey. But do keep the faith and know that you will do well to. Just keep fighting just like you said and YOU WILL WIN THIS BATTLE! I remember looking at people who were about 6-10 mos post op when I was close to having surgery. I never thought I'd experience the success that they had at that point. I could feel their happiness through the words of their posts and wanted to feel the same happiness that they were experiencing. I fear everyday that I will not make my goal but I know quitting is NOT an option. So I know that as long as I do as my surgeon's program instructs me to do, I will get there no matter how long it takes. And I'm sure you will too, try and keep a positive outlook as you go along and all will work itself out in the end. Best of luck to you, ~~~T C.~~~

It's hard to say what you can expect...it's really up to you.   Surgery is only a tool for weight loss..there are people that have WLS and are eating candy bars a few weeks later.   Every surgery type has "averages" of excess weight  you can expect to lose:  Lap band:  50-60 percent of your excess weight RNY:  65-75 percent of your excess weight DS:     75-85 percent of your excess weight But just because those are the averages doesn't mean you can't do better.     I was 492 lbs the day of my first consult, I lost 20 lbs the month before surgery and walking into OR at 472.   Today is my 15th month anniversary from having the Duodenal Switch, and I'm down to 214 lbs, i've set and reset my goal weight because of excess skin (something most SMO people have to deal with post op)...my origional goal weight was 175, I've reset it to 205 because my plastic surgeon says I'm carrying around about 20 lbs of excess skin.   With that said, I've lost 96 percent of my excess weight, and I will make my goal weight (I lost 5 lbs this past month).   You can make the most of your weight loss by following your doctors instructions, and really working the program.   I hope this helps Scott
