Need Your Help

I am a 2 year post-op RNY'er and is seeking an appointment with a Plastic Surgeon to begin reconstructive surgery.  I contacted a PS office and was told that they needed a referral from my insurance company before they could make an appointment.  However, I thought that the appointment would be the first step as that would determine if the PS surgery will be medically neccessary  or not and then I will be able to contact the insurance company.  I just don't want to make an error and automatically get denied or pre-warn the insurance company of my plight. If anyone has any information they can offer me, please respond.  I will need to have the surgery in less than 6 months as I will have another insurance carrier. Thanks for any assistance.

Whether you need a referral is determined by your insurance.  Some insurers require a referral for any visit to a specialist, such as a plastic surgeon.  Other insurers do not require referrals to see a specialist.  Even if your insurance does not require a referral, you can sometimes get an appointment with a specialist sooner if you have a referral from your PCP.  So I'd suggest two things.  First, call your insurance company and ask if they require referrals to see a specialist.  Second, call your PCP and ask them for a referral to a plastic surgeon.  Assuming your PCP is aware of your situation, he/she should be willing to give you a referral.  Then act accordingly.  Good luck on your continuing journey -  Kellie
