How do you get weighed pre-op?

I dont know how many folks here are above 350lbs but as a person over 425lbs I cant get weighed just anywhere.  My PCP's office scales only go to 350. The last time I weighed was when I was going to a diet doctor for pills over year ago.  I will be going in for some pro-op testing and don't know what to do about getting weighed since my doctor cant do it and my WLS surgeon is in Mexico. I would like to buy some nice scales after I have my DS to monitor my weight loss but dont plan to do so until then.  Any ideals till then?

Why not buy your scale now. I think I remember some of the better models going up to 450. My other suggestion would be to stop by your local hospital. If you ask to speak to the nursing supervisor I am sure she or he will help you. Jo

Hmmm... I didn't think about my local hospital. I wonder how much they would charge for that?  I think Monday I will call and ask them.   Thanks

Hi DeDee,

I agree with Joteddie's post to look into getting a scale.  You will eventually need one even though sometimes I recommend to posters to throw out the scale.  Also going to a local hospital and talking the nursing super is an excellent idea.  Most hospitals have bariactic departments.  You could also go to a weigh****chers meeting before the crowds come in and ask if you could be weighed.  They have scales that are for wheel chair bound clients so you could use that or the computerized which go up to the 5's.

My PCP as well as my gastric doc doesn't have a scale to weigh me in the beginning.  Perhaps you can talk to your PCP about investing in a more modern scale, but you are not going to need it for very long.

Let us know what you decide to do.

Thanks yall, It is very embarrassing to me when I go to my PCP and cant be weighed. Here is a crazy and sad story,  I had been going to this doctor for years and his nurses always weighed me and I would bounce around between 330-345 year after year. When I finally decided I wanted to have WLS in 2004-2005 I got to go see a surgeon and in his office he had these digital scales that I stood on barefoot and they do a print out of weight and mortality rate. Well he came into the room after his nurse weighed me in and said I was 425lbs and blah blah blah I dont know what he said after 425 because I was balling. I thought I was really about 340 so I was like WTF!!!!!  He wanted to know why I was so upset and I explained to him about the scales at my PCP office and he said that those old slider scales arent that great and since that was as high as they would go then I was probably unbalance everytime I was weighed there. What a way to find out your actually your 90lbs heavier then you thought. This all happened right in front of my husband who I think didnt know what to think himself. Humiliating indeed.  I haven't been weighed in over a year because it is so inconvienent to me. I guess I will have to buy a scale and then just take it to visits with me maybe! ~Dedee

Atmy surgeon's ofice their scales I think they said go up to 800 lbs so do the ones at the weight loss clinic. When I had my last knee replacement one of the hospitals weighed me and their scale went up to 800 lbs. My PCP has an old one that only goes up to 350. I use to go get weighed at the hospital to see what I weighed. They were very niceabout it. Pam

I was 472 lbs the day of surgery....and I didn't own a scale.  Yes, it's kind of "hard" not having a scale to measure your own progress...but you'll be below 350 lbs so quickly it doesn't pay to spend 200 or 400 dollars to buy a scale that can accomidate you....at least in my opinion.  I had to wait till i got to my surgeons office to get my "offical" weigh ins...which was fine....it was always a really fun surprise. I was 423 at my first surgery.  I went to the Post Office's bulk mail center to weigh.  You just stand and it weighs.  I hated not being able to use a regular scale but at least it was accurate.
