Hello All, I just found this group on here. My Bmi is 92. I'm curious to see if anyone was near mine when they had their surgery. I am hopefully having a open Rny by the end of the month, insurance issues has forced my doc to try and speed up the process.

Hello.  I started with a BMI of 83 - it was 78 or 76 at surgery time I think.  I was able to have it laparoscopically, but I have several friends and acquaintances who had higher BMIs and their surgeons also opted to do the RNY open.  They and I have all had success, but several of us had complications (I had bowel obstruction, one friend had infection in her incision and strictures, and another had to be put on a respirator for a few weeks).  I don't know in any or all cases if the higher BMI had something to do with it.  We have several people on this board who also started with very high BMIs and have done fantastically.  Good luck with your surgery and all the best!

Hi, You will find many people who have been 400lbs and up when they had their surgery. I was at a 62 I think. I started at 423lbs and that was 3 1/2 years ago. I now can eat everything and my pouch is now a stomach again after so long...but I was diligent in my protein, vits and support group for the first 2 years and I think that is what helped me learn new eating habits. If you look at my profile, you will see the difference from then till now. I had NO complications and I had the open. I was driving and back to working a few hours a day after 2 weeks. You would be smart to try and lose what you can between now and your surgery so it is safer and easier for the doctors, but keep positive thoughts and you will be fine. best of luck to you and keep us posted. Welcome, you'll feel right at home here. At my fattest, I weighed around 600 lbs, which I'm sure put my BMI over 90.  When I formally began the process for WLS, my BMI was 88.  It's now around 35ish.  I had a boatload of health issues when I was quite fat and nearly all of them are gone now.  Having said that, WLS is not an easy road.  Do you feel emotionally prepared?  The surgery itself is usually the "easy" part, it's the head trips down the road that can be a real drag. We aren't shy flowers here, so feel free to ask us any questions you need answered.   Kix

My BMI at the time of surgery was in the 90's.  Check out my pictures on my profile.  It has been only 4 months and I'm very happy with my progress.  I'm not sure how much mobility you have, but while in the hospital, they gave me a special bed.  It converted into a chair and made getting in and out of the bed so much easier.   Good luck with your upcoming surgery.

My highest weight was 427lbs which put me at a BMI of 71.1 I managed to lose down before surgery to 359 and a BMI of 59.7

I have read on here though of many that had a BMI as high as yours and they have all done very well. I am sure you will be fine so no worries!!

Best wishes to you on your journey!

My BMI was 84.  My doctor was very cautious, expecting that I would have complications at that size.  Instead of going right to the RNY, he did a simpler surgery, a vertical sleeve gastrectomy. This reduced the size of my stomach and limits the amount I can eat,  but does not involve my intestines, so there is no malabsorbtion.  I am two years out and down 150 pounds, but have been plateaued for a year now.  This summer I wil have a laparoscopic RNY to help me continue losing.  I had no complications whatsoever, which I credit to my surgeon's caution in doing a limited surgery when I was at my highest risk (and to the amazing staff at USC University Hospital.)  I was in intensive care just for observation, just in case of complications, for the first 24 hours after surgery.  Surgery is risky at this size - they need to watch you like a hawk, and it doesn't hurt to have a family member or friend there advocating for you when you are doped up and in pain.   But you get past those first few days, those first few weeks - life begins again.  May healing energy surround you as you take this step toward your future.

Our fates result from our own choices, in this life and every other.
I bid you only remember that, and choose mindfully,
according to the wisdom that is within you.
