Hi, Welcome to the forum.   You have come to the right place.  One thing in your favor is that men (I am not being sexist here, lol) lose weight faster than us girls.  I am 5'8" tall and carry a majority of my weight in the bottom half of my body in the front.  I started the journey at 500 lbs. and at surgery was 450 and a BMI of 69.  I am now somewhere in the high 2's and having my a panni and hernia operation at the end of this month. I also had open RNY.  Hang in there, this time next year you will probably be at about 150 lbs. less and the BMI won't be so important as the abiltiy to lead a quality life. Good luck to you my friend. Jeanne

Thanks again everyone. The reason for asking is through my searches I've not found that much on people my size having this surgery. I have seen the shows on Discovery and Tlc, but I'd figure there would be more stories about people my size. Oh well funny how life is. I wanted this surgery so bad, now as it looks like it's going to happen I wonder if it's the right thing to do. I'm still going through with it, I guess it's just nervous feelings.

In the end, BCV-- it's really going to be down to what you can and cannot live with, and that's going to be a matter for you alone to decide. Living with a BMI in the 90s is extremely high risk. I do not know what your quality of life is, but can tell you mine was horrible with a BMI of 62, so I can imagine daily living is a challenge.  On the flip side-- operations, for a person with a BMI, can also be extremely high risk. For me, it was a decision of wanting to live free, or die trying. I felt captive in my increasingly immobile body-- and decided that I was willing to pay any price-- even risk my own death-- to liberate myself from the pain and loss of freedom that obesity was causing me. You also may do well to have a look at many surgical options. While *I* chose the RNY , many people with very high BMIs report better success with the Duodenal Switch, so be sure to look into that option as well. Best of luck to you!

Hey Shari, I just noticed that you had your surgery over at Temple in Philly.  I have heard of Thorofare and I am in NJ more than I am here in Philly but don't know where Thorofare comes in at.   You have done very well on your journey.  I wish you continued success. Jeanne

Thanks Jeanne--

Thorofare is also called "West Deptford" if that helps!

My quality of life is not good, but I am however very mobile. I still drive and walk around without assistance. I take care of myself. I have always had labor intensive jobs, so I think that helps contribute to my good health other than the weight, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and recurring cellulitis infections in my legs there has been no other issues. I feel that my health is very good considering other people I see my size. That is the main reason I have chosen to go ahead with this procedure. My surgeon is excellent, and is very well known and respected in this field. I have talked to him about others he has done my size and bigger, but I would always like to get a patients view on what additional challenges they faced due to there size. Basically all I'm doing now is being here now, there is no quality to my life and I want that to change. I go into this knowing if something does go wrong and I do die from the surgery I know I gave it a shot. I mean how much longer do I have, who knows.

Those feelings are perfectly normal...I got right to the waiting room at the hospital the day of surgery and verbalized concerns about was I doing the right thing...seemed so drastic. Then I mentally calculated all my health issues and that feeling immediately vanished.  Life is precious...you ARE doing the right thing for yourself and to enjoy life to its fullest. I wish you luck and peace of mind. Keep us updated on your feelings and progress.  Jeanine
