Anyone 5'9 and over 400?

I had posted this in the general topic board and someone suggested I post it here too. I'm just curious to hear from anyone who is 400+ and TALL.  As you are well aware, people who are tall carry their weight very differently and also lose it differently than ,say, someone who only needs to lose 100 pounds.  I currently weigh 436, but my high was 452, and I'm 5'10".  I am having lap RNY on Jan 23rd in Ypsilanti, MI with Dr. Poplawski and am just looking to see who's out there and who is or has been in my shoes. -Becky  =oD

Hi Becky, Glad you jumped onto our board. I'm 5'11" and was 414 (BMI 57.7)at my highest. I'm 294 (BMI 41) now. I had my surgery (lap RNY) 9/4/07. I feel fantastic and haven't been this weight for twenty years. You are right, our taller bodies lose differently overall, but each person loses according to how they put the weight on. One thing that I've had to work through emotionally is that the shorter women change sizes quicker than we do, and at the same weight or more will be smaller sizes. To me, you can see the changes in their photos more, but that may just be me not being able to see my own change (a common problem for us chronic dieters). You can contact me for any support you want, because you may find you will be treated very differently as a tall woman when you are closer to a normal size. There are issues that may need to be addressed for those of us who are always going to attract attention when we walk into a room, once our armor is gone. Good luck on your surgery!! -Julie

But taller women look a lot thinner!  I wouldn't think it would affect how you change sizes, although I can see how it might affect starting in a larger size - broader shoulders and what have you.  I know I had a lot higher BMI than some others here but wore the same sizes I guess because I'm small framed underneath.  I don't really know how it all works, but you are doing amazingly and looking fantastic! I couldn't see real changes from pictures until the last round at 5months.  Up until then I thought people were kind of humoring me

I really like being a taller woman. Even now, I like the physical parity of being able to look my co-workers in the eye. Or over their heads, if I was wearing heels back in the old days BA (Before Arthritis).

Its true, us taller women do 'hide' it better b/c of our height.  In fact, many people do not believe I weigh as much as I do.  (Which kind of makes me feel better, but still is no reason so stay this way!)  Anyways, I took some pics of myself today and labelled them with my weight, height and date.  It'll be a good start.  I'm also going to measure myself.  Only 10 days until surgery!!  Oh boy....LOL

Yes, we do carry the same weight it better. But then it depends on where we are carrying it. I had it in my face and neck early on, so I always looked very fat. But my bust and legs stayed normal size. But my shoulders? I was a linebacker!!!! And when my ass got hit, I couldn't fit in chairs my shorter and same weight peers could get into. You are so right about people not believing you weigh what you do! I used to sit in meetings where co-workers would express their concern about a client who must weigh at least 300 lbs!" When I would mention later to someone how this made me feel, they would respond with something about how they couldn't understand why it bothered me since I didn't weigh anything near that. And I knew they were being genuine about it! Oy! As for losing sizes, there is more body area from which each lost pound must come before a change in body size will be made. Isn't this right, or is it my imagination? I did flunk physics after all. Someone help me out here....... But heh, I'm glad when I can see the parade over all those heads :) -Julie

I am 6' tall and I started at 386.  I lost in my belly first, which is where I carried a lot of weight anyway.  It is frustrating to still be so big (240 give or take) when I had really hoped to be able to get to 199. :(   Although, when we discuss weight at work, and I say I would like to lose 50 pounds, a lot of thin people say "I don't see 50."  Maybe they are just being nice. :)  It is nice to hear, anyway. Take care and good luck!

I was 5'10" before age and weight shrunk me - I now measure 5'8". But I'm pre-op, so not any help....

I used to carry most of my weight low. It's only been in the last 5 years that I got any large amount of interior abdominal bulk. Oh, I do have humongous boobs that I'm looking forward to have get smaller. But they will probably just get long & flat.

Yuck, nice image, huh?
