Introduction

Just wanted to introduce myself...  I am Kelly and I am from Michigan .  I am just starting my WLS journey.  My dh and I have attended an orientation at the surgeon’s office that I would like to use.  Tomorrow, I am meeting with my PCP to discuss my decision.  I am little nervous about that.  While she and I have discussed many other options for weight loss, we have never discussed surgery before.  So I am really not sure her take on it.  I am thankful that my dh is supportive of my decision, but I wish he was able to come with me tomorrow.  Unfortunately he has started back to work full time this week after having the winter months off.

My current BMI is 55 (at least based on my last doctor visit in December).  Part of my reason for wanting the surgery is that I have developed high blood pressure and continue to struggle with my PCOS and Insulin Resistance. I also have two small children (3 & 5) and I want to be able to do all the fun things I use to love, like ride roller coasters and just play in general!!

Right now, surgery wise I am leaning towards VSG, but also considering the LAP Band.  I don’t think I am a candidate for RnY.  I have had my elbow joint replaced due to an accident and take medication for that. The meds are similar to arthritis meds and I have heard you shouldn’t do RnY if you are on arthritis meds.

If you are on NSAID's most RNY surgeons would say ...you are not a canidate for the RNY.  RNYers in general are more prone to ulcers..both marginal and blind stomach ulcers, and since NSAID's add to the ulcer mix....it's a no go.      The lap band is extemely ineffective for someone with a BMI over 50.  Study after study show it is minimally effective (statistically) for people that are not too fat (BMIs less then 40) and who are under 40 years old. The DS is a VSG with an intestinal bypass.  You get to keep a fully functioning stomach and at the same time get malabsorbtion.   You can take NSAIDs and other meds that would be a no no with the RNY.   Good luck to you. You've got to say, I think that if I keep working at this and want it badly enough I can have it. It's called perseverance. -Lee Iacocca
