Female question - IUD a good idea?

Howdy,
I'm wondering if anyone out there got an IUD to counteract the fertility fairy coming after the surgery. I'm thinking about it.
We don't want to have another child until 2 years after my surgery (whenever that happens). I've never done well with birth control pills (they make my blood pressure go up and make me into a crazy person). I understand they don't work real well after the surgery anyway because of the hormonal roller coaster with your fat cells giving up estrogen or whatever.
Depo provera shots gave me a full time period. No thank you.
I'm worried that the condoms won't be enough.
My periods are all whacked out right now -- combo of maybe undiagnosed PCOS and having an ovary/cyst removed in 2004. I periodically take a pregnancy test just to make sure nothing's in the oven.
I'm thinking I'd get the IUD soon because I don't want to have to postpone my elusive surgery if I do get preggers from an accident.
Any comments?
Thank you.
Patti

IUDs have improved since I had one (mid 1970s), and I remember when the NP inserted it, I nearly flew off the table and shot straight up to Jupiter!  Boy, did it hurt!    Ah, those good old campus clinic days...

Friends of mine who have had children (I haven't) said it didn't hurt to have the IUD inserted, so I'm pretty sure my experience isn't typical.

At age 50.8, I only have one egg left and the factory is in the process of shutting down, so I can't answer your question as a post-op.  I can't imagine there's a reason why you couldn't have it done.

I wouldn't trust "just condoms" either, even though I only have one egg left.  My luck, the pesky swimmer would find the darn thing and POOF, motherhood!  Yikes!

You are a perfect candidate for an IUD - stable relationship, previous children. If you decide to get one, choose Mirena because the copper one may increase volume of your period, and you are going to be watching out for anemia for the rest of your life already, no need to exacerbate it.

I wanted an IUD, but haven't had kids so no Mirena, and I also decided the copper one wasn't right for me. I'm using NuvaRing. I had a 2 month break where I went back on pills and it made me crazy, so back to the ring. It has fewer hormonal side effects, and I don't really feel it inside. I stopped it to see if my sex drive would improve, but nope.

I have also looked into the new IUD -  I have one son.  I did the nuva ring and it gave me the worst headaches!!  I did depo and gained 120lbs in 2 years and I did ok with the pill but I got pregnant with my son while I was on ortho tricyclen.

I am going to wait post surgery and talk with my ob/gyn (who is thrilled I am having this surgery).  Until then - we use the dreaded condoms

I've had a Mirena IUD since March 2005 and basically things have been okay.  Now, the literature says that it decreases your flow or you'll have maybe 2-3 days of scant spotting for a cycle.  Needless to say, I have a regular cycle every 23-29 days with medium flow.  When it was inserted, I was 6 wks postpartum weighing 294.  I gradually gained weight.  I had my surgery July 2006 and when I started to lose weight, it made my cycle go crazy!!!  Mirena releases Progesterone just as Depo Provera...some people have no cycles while some have crazy bleeding with Progesterone.  All in all, the IUD has worked well for me.

My surgeon made me get on BC before he would schedule my surgery.  I've never had kids so I got the depo.  I didn't have a period for 2 months then bled for 3 weeks, yuck!  I do have PCOS so my cycle is very irregular.
My stepdaughter has the IUD and has no problems at all.  My only question about it is how hard is it to get preggo after its removed.
