Kix Returns!

I'm back, refreshed and renewed after my quick trip to Las Vegas and the armpit of Northern Arizona known as Kingman.

It was nice to get away!  I had a free ticket on Southwest and a cheap hotel room ($30/night), so it was pretty much an offer I could not refuse.

I had fun!  The slots were pretty loose, and I discovered the best time to play slots is between 4-6:30 AM, for some reason they seem to be friendlier and return nicer hunks of money than at other times during the day.

Lots of foreign tourists in Vegas due to the weak US dollar.  I had many nice conversations with folks from all over the world, including two nice young men from England.  I told them about my trips to England "back when they weren't even a gleam in their parents' eyes."

It was interesting to hear from the foreign folks that they were surprised Las Vegas didn't live up to the hype it gets abroad.  I think people assume there is actually stuff to do in Vegas other than gambling.  If there is, I doubt it would be much of a draw.  Not only that, there is so much construction going on in Vegas, both on and off the Strip, that it's getting close to impossible to get around without being seriously stuck in traffic.

I was acutely aware during my trip of how grateful I am to have had WLS.  I saw many seriously fat people in Vegas who were struggling to get around and suffering from the heat.  As I walked from venue to venue, I remembered how that used to be me, and how much better my life has become since I lost 300+ lbs.  It's a good reminder and one which I hope will carry me when I'm struggling with food issues.

Speaking of food, the buffets aren't as good as they used to be, I think the economy has   hit the hotels hard.  I didn't have one decent meal the whole time I was there, and pretty much picked at my food while I was there.  It just wasn't very tasty, although I managed to get in adequate amounts of protein.  Having said that, I did find a shop in the Mandalay Place shopping venue that sells handmade SF ice creams made with Splenda.  OM, the chocolate was to die for, even at $4/scoop!  Good thing I don't live in Vegas, I'd get circus fat again just from eating ice cream 24/7.

I had to laugh at all the cars I saw in LV that had license frames with L.A. area dealer names on them.  I think our pals Jan and Jennie are the only folks left in L.A., every other Angelino has moved to Vegas.

It was in the mid 100s in Vegas and Kingman the entire time I was there, and I came home to 52 degrees and pouring down rain in Colorado.  BRR!  I think we're going to have an early winter, the trees have already started to turn.

Anyway, it's nice to be home.  I saw my ENT this morning and he removed the splints from my sinuses (it felt like he was pulling traffic cones out of my nose!), so I feel liberated and violated at the same time.  Go figure.  I'm recovering nicely, although he says I don't get to own my nose for two more weeks, it's still his and he will return it to me after my last follow-up appt the end of Sept.

Long story short, I missed you all very much and I'm glad to be back!

Welcome Back!!!!  You were soooooo missed.

My boss is in Vegas for a conference.  She just called me this morning and she is overwhelmed with the greed and all the people.  She's not staying on The Strip and went to an off-strip restaurant for dinner last night.  She was shocked by the poverty she saw.  She said you can look out the window and see all the lights and glamour of The Strip and just a block or two away, scary neighborhoods and poverty that broke her heart.  All that glimmers....

Yes, the rain is making quite a story here in the Springs.  We've had almost 2" of rain since last night.  A major bridge near my house is closed because something like 20 feet of dirt was washed away from the pilings and they need to reinforce them before traffic can use the bridge.  We are so dry and the ground couldn't soak it up, so it washes away.

Glad you're home and back with us.  Now if we can get pburton back around we'll be in fine shape!  Are you wearing your lipstick?  I sure am just to make my Republican friends mad!!! LOL

Jana, are you calling me a hog?!

Seriously, at McCarren Airport in Vegas, I had to listen to a bunch of faux-wealthy Southerners (Texans, I think, but I don't want to stereotype) blather about how Obama was such a pig and Palin is the only thing that will save this country.  Oy.  This, after listening to them blather about losing $2500 in one poker tournament, $3000 in another, etc.  They were quite loud, and all I could think was, "Trash with cash."  Their conversations were so loud I'm pretty sure you could have heard them in the Springs if you had your windows open.  I was dying to ask them why, if they were so wealthy, were they flying Southwest?  Surely rich folks hire their own jets!

welcome back kix!

glad to hear you had a good time. i can surely relate to your feelings about WLS. i think it about it all the time as i go thru life and see others who've not had the wonderful opportunity to have this life changing experience. it is an excellent motivator to remain diligent.

glad you've returned to our little corner of the internet!

It really is affirming, isn't it?

I saw many folks on scooters and using oxygen, and that was me not all that long ago.  One day on my journey, I actually walked six miles in the course of the day.  I'll admit I was tired the following day, but I think I didn't drink enough water to compensate for the activity and the god-awful heat.

What's new and exciting in Indiana these days?

Oh Kix, so glad your back. I wasn't aware that you were going to Vegas.
I think I am the only one who loves Vegas... Of course I love to gamble as well
I have been twice and want to go again so bad. I know what you mean about feeling so good about yourself while there . I noticed they rent those little "rascals or scamps" that you ride around in and the majority of people I saw in them were extremely obese people. I must give them credit thou, when I was that large I didn't have the guts to go on vacation. I just stayed wholed up in  my house.
Anyway you were greatly missed glad your back.
Have a great weekend

Lynn, I didn't know they rent those scooters down there.  I wondered how so many people afforded to own those scooters when insurance companies are really stingy about who qualifies for them.  I didn't meet the criteria for a scooter when I was mobility impaired because I could walk a few steps with a walker.

I also love gambling.  I need a bigger income to indulge my hobby!

A friend of mine told me to try the downtown casinos because they supposedly pay out better.  Downtown Vegas is scary!  When I consider the reputation Oakland has for being a scary, dangerous city, I can say I never felt afraid in Oakland, but downtown Vegas creeped me right out.
Lots of hardcore homeless, the kind that look like they'd shank you just because it was Tuesday.
After losing $20 in one of the downtown casinos, I got back in the rental car and scooted right out of that part of town.  I read in the local paper they are trying to regentrify it, but like poor Oakland, they try but just can't quite pull it off.

When I win the Powerball, I'll treat you to a fun Vegas weekend!

Welcome back.  I can't believe you were on vacation with stuff up your nose?  Wasn't that difficult?  Especially flying!

My nose dude gave me all sorts of sinus rinses to keep my inner nose hydrated, and the splints kept everything open, so I actually didn't have any problem with the cabin pressure.  The splints kind of drove me crazy, though.  (Warning, TMI!  The splints felt like atomic boogers, and I was dying to just jam my index finger up there, grab the sucker, and pull!).

The air in Vegas is very dry, so I had to hydrate my nose five times daily as opposed to the twice daily I do here at home.  (Warning, TMI again!  It's like douching my nose!  )

Sorry for the too-vivid descriptions!

Welcome Home Kix!  Gee...I have been yearning to go back to Vegas with DH, but from the sounds of things, I'm not missing anything! LOL  Yes, buffets are a thing of the past for us. It takes about 1/10 of what I used to consume to fill me up.  I see many folks that struggle to get around and I wonder how they function in life. Its very sad. I have another daughter who is seriously considering WLS. I went to an info seminar with her this week for support. I don't say much to her except, educate yourself and make your own decision. I'll be there no matter what you decide.  Anyway, glad you were able to get away and enjoy yourself. Now keep warm!  HUGS  Jeanine
