My BMI is 51 and my PCP is recommending the Lap Band after several years of morbid obesity and unsuccessful attampts at weightloss.I have researched my options and feel that for me the Lap band is the only option I would personally choose.I have heard that it mey not be as sucessful due to my high BMI and a good friend and fellow RN of mine who works on a bariatric surgery floor stated that their top physician does not do lapbands on people with a bmi over 45 and my surgeon will probably push for a RNY. Any successful banders with a high bmi care to comment.

Additional consideration is how and why you overeat.  Are you an ice cream eater?  Do you eat a lot of sweets?  Do you binge?

My surgeon would have a definate bias for doing rny at your bmi, but that alone doesn't factor into his decision.  He actually won't do a lap band on ice cream lovers.  He terms it a slider food that you can just keep eating with a lap band.  Most of us RNYers would dump.

There are other considerations also that might help decide what is best for you.

What do you consider your eating issues?

I would highly recommend going to the Lap Band forum.  I do have a friend locally who has lost 96 pounds.  She's about 5'5" and was close to 300 pounds so her BMI was close to 50.  It's a matter of discipline to eat healthy foods and avoid simple carbs, high fat and exercise.

We have the extra tool of the possibility of dumping and the malabsorption of fat and some nutrients and calories which greatly incresaes our success.  You only have restriction with Lap Band.

I tend to not have an off switch......so I feel like portion control is my main problem. Yes I lke sweats but not an overindulger since I went on a very calorie restrictive diet 2 years ago.Never one to eat alot of icecream.I have posted on the lapband board too.

Why are you not interested in other options?

Have you considered the Ds?

Check out www.dsfacts.com or www.duodenualswitch.com to get CORRECT info about the duodenual switch.

Honestly if you want results your best change of losing all your excess weight and keeping it off lies with the DS.

I would also suggest talking to the folks on the revision board, ask them what they would have had the first time if they could go back now and do it again.

Good luck,
