I had surgery in Feb my doctor required the IVC filter(i have no history of blood clots) but was pretty much immobile before the surgery and im so glad he had it put in because i did pass a  clot and the filter saved me..
I still have the filter in place....

My BMI at my consult was 67 - my suregon told me if I did not get my BMI below 60, then I would have to have a filter.  I got my BMI down to 59.8 (whew!!) and did not have to have the filter but I did go home on Lovenox (blood thinner) and I was on that for 14days.

Good luck!

My surgeon recommended it for me because I have a h/o of PE (blood clots in my lungs). He wants me to have it done prior to surgery. It may not be a bad thing because one of the side effects are blood clots with this surgery and being overweight we are more at risk. I had my IVC filter in for 6mos and had it removed. I didnt want it out because Im allergic to blood thinners so having the filter made me more at ease. I hope all goes well with you. Take care.
