Peg -

The liquid diet sucks, no way around it. It to me was the very worst part of everything!

Our bodies equipped with molars are designed to chew, so a liquid diet is not at all what we're ready for.

I thought I too would start the liquid diet early, I had to do a 2 week but I decided to start at 3 weeks prior to surgery because I was so excited. Ugh, that didn't last long! I got sick of it very fast. I did drink shakes during the day but would have a good healthy dinner with hubby that first week, the next 2 weeks on the Dr ordered liquid diet I did my very best to stick to it. My surgeon did tell me if I was going to cheat to have a small amount of some really tough jerky and no matter what do not eat carbs. So a couple times I gave in and had the jerky, it was the best thing I ever tasted in my life.

The liquid diet part is rough, but you need to focus on what's ahead - A Better You!!

Best wishes to you!

Before is the hardest part, after isn't as bad. At least it wasn't for me. I wasn't hungry at all after surgery. I would cook like crazy and beg everyone to eat in front of me so I could live vicariously! I know they all thought I was nuts, heck even I thought it.

I don't think that you can truly prepare yourself no matter how hard you try. It's not only a shock to your system but it takes your brain a long time to figure out this new way of life!

I agree with Jan that afterwards the liquid diet isn't bad - I ended up on it for about 6 weeks because I was on it for two weeks, then had complications and a second surgery and then 4 more weeks. I did start adding some liquidy soft foods like strained soups and thinned mashed potatoes and avocado, but honestly, other than the avocado, food was not at all interesting to me. Just the smell made me sick.

Before hand, it was another story. I was on the two shakes and a very small protein/veggie meal for about 4 months before surgery. I tried my best, but now and again I cheated on dinner and had a real meal. For the last two weeks before surgery I was on the same thing but didn't cheat. I was only on strict liquids for 48hrs before surgery - clear liquids only like broth and juice. That was possibly the hardest 48hrs of my life. I broke down once and chewed a piece of pot roast - and then I spit it out. Totally bizarre behavior.  I told my surgeon about it though. He didn't even blink, I think he's heard it all before. Do your best best best but understand that its hella hard. There's nothing easy about it. After surgery its much simpler. Most of your hunger for a while will just be in your head or because you are mourning the loss of your coping mechanism.

Peggy, I only had a 5 day diet and the first 3 days were the toughest.  But the last two days, I didn't even want to eat or drink.  I felt the need to chew was super-super strong so I made lipton's onion soup mix and strained out the dehydrated onions.  I also made campbells chicken noodle soup and strained out the noodles.  For some reason, that really helped.

When you have the fear of not having the surgery if your liver hasn't shrunk enough, somehow, that gives you the courage and willpower to stick to the liquid diet.

You will be amazed of what you can do when your life depends upon it.

As far as the two weeks post-op, you won't want to eat.  So that dilemma is solved!

Good luck....you can do this!

I had never heard of the "liquid Pre Op Diet" prior to coming on OH after my operation (I didn't know this "place" even existed!). I didn't have to do liquids pr op, except fot two days before surgery. I was also on liquids for ten days post op. I didn't even want to drink them and OMG I DEFINITLY didn't want to eat anything at all. I had to do South Beach PHASE I for 2 weeks before my operation (to shrink the liver) Phase I is NOOOOOO CARBS at all. I did regualar Phase II South Beach for ten months beforehand that though...it's very low carb. Some fruits are allowed.

It must have been very difficult for you guys to be on a liquid diet for so long, appetite intact. I would die. Kudos to you all for making it through! That's some serious willpower!

Hang in there Peg.

Start: 487 lbs (8/07) Lost 81 lbs pre op on South Beach. 406 lbs at surgery (6/08). 179 post op, by 2011. I  lost 308 lbs. Gained 98 while pregnant (2012-13) lost all but 25. My goal is to be 179 again!
