That depends on what your goal is. Are you trying to lose weight? Trying to maintain? What types of carbs do you eat? Fiber is a carb but it doesn't affect your weight, per se. It helps you feel satisfied, and it helps you poop. If you are eating a lot of fruits and veggies and whole grains you may be able to eat more carbs. If you are eating a lot of crackers or sweets, that's another story.

There is no set number, but you need some carbs in your diet. The numbers I see most commonly are under 75g if you want to lose (with 20-30g coming from fiber) and 100-150 for maintainance. This is also dependant on how much you exercise. If you exercise a lot you will need more carbs to keep up your energy than if you are not active. Just as a reference, the 'RDA" for a normal 2000cal diet is about 200g carbs.

I'm 18 months out, more or less maintaining, and eat about 125g carbs a day--30-35% of my diet.

I am worried about the carbs from dairy situation. I don't eat any meats or fish so I am heavy on fat free dairy. I wonder if I am getting too many carbs? I think I have to start counting more carefully.

Start: 487 lbs (8/07) Lost 81 lbs pre op on South Beach. 406 lbs at surgery (6/08). 179 post op, by 2011. I  lost 308 lbs. Gained 98 while pregnant (2012-13) lost all but 25. My goal is to be 179 again!

Most of my carbs are from fruit and veggies or dairy as well. Using a low carb milk cut them down significantly, but I still decided from the start that I wasn't willing to give up dairy or fruit completely, and a lot of my protein is from dairy. I grew up in a vegetarian family, and would prefer to be now but its really tough with the post-op guidelines. I am not a fan of tofu or some of the other protein sources recommended. I love cheese and milk and yogurt though!

My program stressed fat free dairy as "good" so I never really considered the carbs it contains before. I eat FF cottage cheese everyday. I love tofu and thankfully it goes down smooth for me (tofu salad with ff mayo, celery and minced red peppers is great!) I wonder if I will have problems from the dairy carbs down the line though.

Regain scares the bejesus out of me. I know this will stop working so well if I don't behave myself.
I wish I had monthly NUT sessions like I did pre op. I need that still I think.

I keep my carbs under 50g, but it does depend on your protein intake too.  Your body can convert protein to carbs.  The higher the protein count the lower the carbs required.  I found this great site that calculates your optimal protein and carb intake dependant on what you want to do ie lose weight, and how much exercise you do and the length you have been dieting.  Here is the link;  http://www.phlaunt.com/lowcarb/19058429.php

Let me know what you think.  Make sure you read the whole article too!

I am early out but my program stresses drinking skim milk between meals.  I have yogurt once per day - in my pre surgery dieting if i took in alot of dairy i would not lose or I would gain weight.  I love milk and cheese but it does not love me =(

Oh and the rest of my post was suppose to say...I keep my carbs under 60g - but I also get the mixed messages from the nut and the suregon.  The suregon wants you eating no carbs (besides veggies or fruit) and to ignore the nut.  The nut wants you to ignore the suregon and focus on healthy eating.  My trainer is about good carbs - especially because he does not want me passing out on him again - LOL!!!  I take a little here and a little there and watch my losses and if it really slows I check my carbs and add or cut if I see changes.

I'm always concerned about my carb intake too. I even emailed Jenn about it a few weeks ago because I was so confused. My nutritionist tells me one thing, my doctor tells me a certain amount and then I get to my trainer and he knocks the numbers down significantly telling me - "You want results, don't you?"

Oh boy. It's so confusing. I go with a combo of what my doctor tells me and what my nutrionist tells me. Trainer boy doesn't really "get" weight loss surgery. That said - I need to keep up with my calories, carbs, ect better. Most days I track on The Daily Plate (my nutritionist can view my intake and she'll email me about it, which is nice) but some days I forget and just go through the motions.
