hi ok i went to my first consult with my surgeon on 2-14-09 and he put me on a diet. it is a protein drink in the morning a salad at lunch and a protein drink at night. i'm fine with all that i mean i found a protein drink i like and salad is alright. the problem is he wants me to loose fifty pounds before i can have my surgery and i'm feeling like thats alot if i could loose fifty pounds i would not need to have weightloss surgery i mean i'm just sayin i cant remember a time in my entire life that i have lost fifty pounds hell i cant even remember ever loosing twenty or ten let alone fifty pounds. so just pray for me cause im a need it all. and i been reading on here and i never heard of any one having to loose so much weight before surgery maybe twenty or thrity but never that much. i tell you this though i am thankful and truly blessed to be able to even have the chance to start over with this wls so i wont complain and all i can do is try my best by sticking to his plan and just praying about this. my question is has anyone on here had to loose that much before having wls and how long did it take? and did you have to get blood work done every two weeks to monitor your food intake

IMO, its not really aboput losing the 50lbs, it more about making the commitment to the post-op lifestyle and shrinking the liver. Its important to shrink the liver for surgery and thats done by a very lo fat diet for a few weeks. I lost 22Lbs in 1 week on my pre-op liquid diet. That wasn't evena  full week just 5 days.

Do the best you can and I asure before you know it it willbe your turn on the table.

I didn't have to, but I chose to help my surgeon by losing what i could pre-op--- in my case, it was 68 pounds in about 4 months, on a reasonable low-cal diet, starting at 1800 cals and working down eventually to 1200 a day.

I am sorry that you are frustrated.  The weight will come off real fast and soon you will have your new tool to help you keep it off and lose much more.  Once you have surgery it will be easier because your smaller pouch will be so much easier to satisfy.  Another thing, you will have a big head start on your weight loss.  I wish you all good things.  Loris

thanks to all who left me messages. or answered my question its not that i dont want to do the protein drink i really am not having a problem with the diet. i just got scared thinking wow 50 pounds how can i loose that much. but i see the protein and the salad everyday equals way less calories and carbs and fat that way you loose fast see i wasnt thinking like that im thinking i ws already on a diet with my doctor and it wasnt helping at all she says i have tyroid problems and thats why it's so hard to loose the weight. so i will just keep praying and trying and something good will come about for me. i got up out my chair yesturday and my pants were fallin down so maybe its already working it has been a week and two days since i started so i will post after i get weighted in tomorrow

I know what you mean. The first surgeon I went to wanted me to lost 50 pounds and I was like, If I could lose the weight on my own, why would I need the surgery? So, thank you lord, I found a surgeon that was a little more flexible and also closer to where I live which was a good thing. I remember when I went to the seminar for the surgeon I am with now, he was there and I got to talk to him. I told him baout the other surgeon telling me that I had to lose 50 pounds before he would do the surgery. Dr. Mann tells me that he sees no reason why I would have to lose the weight before he does the surgery. I chose him not because of that, but because I ahve heard from people how good of a sureon he is and also that he has good bedside manner as well. Right now I am cleared for surgery and I am going for my decision visit son hopefully. I am waiting to hear from the office to tell me the date. Bt what I am saying is, I know its hard, but believe me, it will be worth it in the end. Just hang in there. I am here for you if you need to talk. Take Care..
