Hi, Im new to the site. I am having the sleeve surgery in about 5 mths. Im very confused as to how Im supposed to be eating. I went to the diatician but she didnt give me a diet and Im now on the flinstone vit. and the B-complete and will be ordering protein and calcium supplements.

Am I supposed to be eating just like I will  after surgery?  I know I have to contact her but I know some of you will be able   to lead me. If I dont get approved for the surgery, I will die. I dont want to die yet before  I get more grandbabies. I went to the dr yesterday and then the grocery store. By the time I finally got home. I could barely walk.

I have fibromyalgia, diabetics, arthritis, and just diagnosed with lympoedema in my right leg. I also have congestive heart failure.  Im going to Vanderbilt in Nashville. My dr said with all of my health problems, He is going to go in and do the sleeve and after I lose 100lb he will go back and do a bypass. Im praying that I will lose enough with the sleeve that I wont have to have the other surgery.

Thanks for listening. I need all of the help you can give me.

It sounds like you have a ways to go before you get to surgery. I would start by looking at how you are eating and what you are eating. Start making beter choices - no soda, limit snacks between meals. Also start working on not drinking with your meals or drinking very minimally.

How you eat after the sleeve is very different from how you are more than likely eating now. Cutting back and trying to change your eating habits will help prepare you for surgery.

In the few weeks prior to surgery, your surgeon may put you on a specific diet to prepare your body for surgery by shrinking your liver and helping make some room for doing the surgery laproscopically. It really will depend on your surgeon though and what their requirements are.

Talk to your doc. Most likely you cannot eat right now like you would after surgery.. you'd be miserable right now. Once your surgery date gets closer they may put you on a pre-op diet to try to lose some weight and reduce the size of your liver (if you are having a laparoscopic procedure). Just follow their instructions.

In the meantime you can work on cutting simple carbs like sugars and white bread, rice, and pasta. Try substituting with whole grains at least, and eliminating it all together where you can. Now is a good time to work on cutting soda, taking vitamins regularly, and increasing your protein intake as compared to carbs and fat. Lean meat and veggies are your friend. Many obese people are somewhat protein starved and vitamin deficient. Getting in those vitamins and the protein will help you heal and recover from surgery. A few lifestyle modifications now get you accustomed to life after surgery, but until your doc tells you to specifically follow one diet or another I think your best bet is to just try to be as healthy as you can going into surgery. Exercise if you can, anything helps!

Good luck :)
