My Doctor said I had to lose 70 pounds.  Before, He would  do gastric- by- pass surgery.  I weight 385 pounds.   395 was my highest weight.  I now down to ten pounds. I  weigh 370 pounds now.  But  It took almost two months to lose ten pounds.  My doctor, said,   He would put on any pills or speciall diet.s  He just said That I should just eat 3 meals  with 3 vegetables in it and one protion of meat a day with no snacking at all.

It going so slow.  When workout at the gym all week for and hour at  least  five times a week.  Your think the weight would come off faster.   It will take me two years to get my surgery.   If keep weight at the rate  I,m going at .
Any good Ideal or weight loss tips?    How many pounds did any of you do to lose weight before Gastric-by- pass Surgery.   How did you do it?    I know I did put the weight on overnight it will take a long time to get rid of it.  But, I was so angry with my doctor and was afraid to say any thing.  If I new how to lose 70 pound  by my self then I would not need his help or the surgery.

There are many doctors that don`t require you to loose so much weight before they`ll do surgery. So not loosing 70 pounds will not mean you can`t get surgery... just you need to go to another surgeon.
By the way, have you researched other surgeries then the RNY? For people with a BMI 50+, the RNY is not that effective - it has a failure rate of 35-50 %. The DS is much more effective and not more risky. There is a thread about sucess rate of the DS compared to the RNY a few days ago. Look into it if you havn`t already so that you can make an informed choice.

All the best!

I am right there with you - I have to lose 69 pounds before surgery.  This is an insurance company requirement to have a BMI of 60 or less.  I worked very hard with my nutritionist and at 5 months lost 39 pounds - still have 30 to go.  What she had me to was limit carbs to 60 g a day (believe me that is nothing).  I had to take in 100g of protein, 30g of fat and 1000 calories max a day.  I logged everything on fitday.com and was able to keep track of everything I was putting in my mouth.  It really did work.  If you do eat a carb you should eat 2 proteins to one carb.  She had me get used to protein shakes and protein bars as you will need to prepare to drink these after surgery so no better time than now to get used to it.    She also explained to me that you have to keep your metabolism up by eating five or six very small meals a day.  I wish you all the best and we will get through this together!

Every pound lost is a pound in the right direction.

I went to 4 doctors before I found one who agreed to do surgery on me.  I lost 35 pounds with the three month diet plan they put me on, but that wasn't a requirement.  He said that the whole reason people have RNY is because they can't lose weight on their own.

I did not have to lose weight before my open duodenal switch surgery.  I was absolutely dieted out.  I had been on one yo-yo diet after another and I truly felt I didn't have another diet in me.  If you know losing 70 pounds is not going to happen, don't torture yourself for months.  Find a more understanding surgeon who is comfortable operating on a larger person.  My doctor has operated on people over 700 pounds.

the pre surgical WL shrinks your liver.  I had to do it too.  I lost 81 lbs in ten months pre op.  I did previously have a different surgeon lined up who was willing to do me at nearly 500 lbs.  I am so glad I didn't go that route.  I had a safe surgery.  South Beach really worked for me.  It sucks at 1st but I got used to eating the way I would HAVE to eat post op...which  was a good thing.

Hang in there.  You aren't that big so I don't se why they are making you lose so much...but if they expect you to and don't proovide a nutritionist or any support I would look elsewhere for help.  It's hard to get started alone.

Start: 487 lbs (8/07) Lost 81 lbs pre op on South Beach. 406 lbs at surgery (6/08). 179 post op, by 2011. I  lost 308 lbs. Gained 98 while pregnant (2012-13) lost all but 25. My goal is to be 179 again!

I guess he is right.  The more I lose before surgery.  The smaller I will be after surgery.
