Hello, My name is Diana. I started out with a BMI of 62. I have lost 147 pounds in almost 7 months. I am having a hard time figuring out what my goal should be. How did you figure out your goal? To have a normal BMI I would have to get down to 154. Just to be overweight I would need to get down to 185. I am in a size 20 now and would like to be a 12. Am I selling myself short? A friend of mine who also had wls said I need to have a goal. Thanks, Diana 379/232/?

Hi Diana I'm not sure either. My doctor said 140, but my neice who is about my height, weighs that, and to me she is really skinny. I think I'd be happy at between 150-160. I've also been told that based on my starting weight, I have at least 30 pounds of excess skin that'll need to be removed. Does anyone know how that number is calculated? PaciaB

hi diana i've been wondering about this whole goal thing too. my surgeon has never mentioned the word "goal" to me. to be in the "normal" bmi range, i'd need to get to 170. some days i think, oh, i can do that. other days i think, who are you kidding -- you'll be extremely lucky to get to 200! so, i guess i'm just kind of waiting to see how things unfold as the journey moves along -- without a specific goal. deb -150

Hi Diana, Congrats on your weight loss. You might want to talk to a dietitian. He or she can calculate your ideal body weight base on your height, bone structure and age. The dietitian will have the most up to date info. If you don't have a dietitian you can ask your Dr. for a referral. Some hospitals offer a free dietary consult so you might check it out. There are sites on the web where you can find height and weight charts and also at your doctors office but you will find that some of these vary. I am 50 years old and I am 5'9" with a large frame. Most charts put my ideal body weight as 150-165 or so. I have seen some charts that factor in age and suggest my ideal body weight as around 160-175. I am shooting for 175 but will be happy with 180 I hope this helps Michelle

Hi Diana, You already have a goal..... You said it yourself..."I am a size 20 now and would like to be a 12", this is your goal. Your goal may not be in weight, but it is in clothing size. I am 346lbs now, and my goal is to be 180lbs or a size 12/14. If you are looking to have a weight as your goal, just think about what would make you comfortable and at what weight. I came up with 180lbs, because I remember being 180lbs @ 16 y/o and I was comfortable, I like the way my clothes fit, I like my shape then and I was confident, so I decided on this weight. Plus, I don't think that I will look right being 140lbs (my surgeons goal 4 me) since I do not remember being 140lbs...That is just too little for ME. Don't worry to much about having a weight goal....Like I said you have a goal and you have acheived one already......You had WLS.... I'm aiming for a normal BMI, and I'm a shorty, so 130-135 is what I'd like to weigh. I started at 299 (BMI 55), and last Monday's weigh-in (one week out) I was 283. Since that was actually one pound UP from my weight immediately pre-surgery, I was not thrilled. They tell me its fluid retention. I'm hoping to see a loss this coming Monday.

I have thought about that too. I dont want to be unrealistic but I do have sort of a silly goal. I would like, just once, to weigh less than my husband. I know that it might not happen, but that's been a dream of mine for a long time.
